About us
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center is a central service provider for at-risk individuals and families. Founded in 1922 and renamed honoring Dr. King in 1968, the MLK Community Center continues to evolve in providing a safe and nurturing environment for the changing needs of Newport County, Rhode Island residents who seek nutritional, educational, and social supports to improve the quality of their lives. The MLK served 2,842 predominantly low-income individuals in 2016, 33% being children, and 16% senior citizens. Our program framework can be described in 3 areas: 1) Nutrition, Food Availability and Hunger Prevention, 2) Early Childhood and Extended Learning Time Education, and 3) Community Support Programs. Our agency goals are to: 1) Reduce hunger through food pantry, daily meal program, and home food delivery. 2) Increase health through agency-wide access to Registered Dietitian, nutrition education, Wellness Center, and other engaging programs. 3) Offer high-performing educational programs for children while holistically supporting the needs of their parents/families.

A generous grant from the Dunkin' Joy in Childhood Foundation helps fund two school food pantries at Middletown High School and Tiverton High School and provides healthy meals in our Preschool and After School programs. Dunkin' brings joy because well-fed kids are happy kids. Our Preschoolers love Dunkin' so much they have their own little drive-thru in the class room! 🍩😋 #mlkcenternewportri #preschoolfun #HealthyMealsForKids #bringjoy

Thank you to Pamela McLaughlin, MS, LDN, FPCC, Director of Patient Experience, for presenting us with a $1,000 donation from proceeds from the annual Newport Hospital employees’ holiday basket raffle. Teams of employees from across the hospital created and bid on 32 unique raffle baskets, and proceeds were shared among community partner organizations like the MLK.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made a lasting impact when he dared to dream of a more just and equal world. In 1968, the Center was renamed in his honor after his assassination. Our favorite Dr. King quote, as shown, is literally etched into the walls of the Center. His words empower us not only today, but everyday as we work to fulfill his dream. We are proud to honor him and carry on his legacy. ✊ #mlkcenternewportri #DrMartinLutherKing #MLKDay #IHaveADreamSpeech #EmpoweringCommunity #equality #justice #communitymatters #newportcounty

The MLK Center is dedicated to providing quality education and enrichment for students in our educational programs. Thanks to the Rhode Island Energy Foundation, we can provide education in STEM to our students. Introducing STEM to young kids can open up a world of possibilities for their future and we are proud to have funding and a partnership with Rhode Island Energy to make these opportunities happen. Today, our students are having a blast learning coding, tomorrow they could leading innovators in our community and beyond. #mlkcenternewportri #RIEnergyCares #STEM #STEMeducation #newportcounty #communitymatters #studentstodayleaderstomorrow

The MLK provides over one million meals to Newport County a year through our hunger relief programs. Thanks to the generous support of donors and funders like the Juanita Sanchez Community Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation, we can provide a variety of fresh produce and nonperishable foods specifically requested by our Hispanic/Latinx products community. Providing diverse options helps uplift and empower the people of Newport County, and thanks to the Juanita Sanchez Community Fund, we are proud to do so. #mlkcenternewportri #hungerservices #latinxfoods #hispanicfoods #communitymatters #empoweringcommunity
