Thank you to Newport Mental Health for 60 years of service to our community. Today we celebrated with them at their annual meeting, where our Executive Director, Heather Strout, was honored with the Outstanding Community Service Award. A generous grant from the Dunkin' Joy in Childhood Foundation helps fund two school food pantries at Middletown High School and Tiverton High School and provides healthy meals in our Preschool and After School programs. Dunkin' brings joy because well-fed kids are happy kids. Thank you to Pamela McLaughlin, MS, LDN, FPCC, Director of Patient Experience, for presenting us with a $1,000 donation from proceeds from the annual Newport Hospital employees’ holiday basket raffle. Teams of employees from across the hospital created and bid on 32 unique raffle baskets, and proceeds were shared among community partner organizations like the MLK.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made a lasting impact when he dared to dream of a more just and equal world. In 1968, the Center was renamed in his honor after his assassination. Our favorite Dr. King quote, as shown, is literally etched into the walls of the Center. His words empower us not only today, but everyday as we work to fulfill his dream. The MLK Center is dedicated to providing quality education and enrichment for students in our educational programs. Thanks to the Rhode Island Energy Foundation, we can provide education in STEM to our students. Introducing STEM to young kids can open up a world of possibilities for their future and we are proud to have funding and a partnership with Rhode Island Energy to make these opportunities happen. The MLK provides over one million meals to Newport County a year through our hunger relief programs. Thanks to the generous support of donors and funders like the Juanita Sanchez Community Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation, we can provide a variety of fresh produce and nonperishable foods specifically requested by our Hispanic/Latinx products community. Thanks to generous funding from CVS Health as a part of their Hometown Fund, the MLK can provide 25 critical programs that fight hunger, promote wellness, educate kids, support families, engage seniors, and above all, build community in Newport County.
