As a founding board member of Dream in NOVA , I’m proud to share that we’ve already logged over 100 hours of service in just a few months. From our Bilingual Volunteer Corps to our upcoming After-School Cosmetology Program, we’re actively empowering our community and creating opportunities for all. For me, this work is personal. Systemic barriers are real, and too many people face obstacles that prevent them from reaching their full potential. On December 4th our Bilingual Volunteer Corps collaborated with the Prince William Community Health Coalition to engage the Spanish speaking community in a discussion to improve community health services. We had a fantastic time getting more members involved in these crucial conversations. More sessions to come in the following month! The coalition and VA Health Department wants input from all residents. Our Bilingual Volunteer Corps is looking to recruit Farsi speakers to serve the Farsi speaking community. This evening, our Bilingual Volunteer Corps was privileged to attend Family Night at Manassas Park Middle School to build relationships and assist with translation. We met some awesome families and enjoyed learning about their stories. We look forward to continuing to work closely with this great community!  

On Sunday, we had the privilege of attending the VACOLAO Latino Coalition - of Latino Organizations summit at George Mason University. This event provided valuable insights into the unique challenges faced by the Latino community, which are essential for us at Dream in NOVA to understand and better assist our community. We were inspired by Delegate Marty Martinez, who shared important legislative efforts aimed at fostering a better Virginia. Additionally, a panel of healthcare professionals highlighted significant barriers, including language access, that impact the community's ability to access essential resources. We’ve also learned the Health and Human Services Department is investing $4 million in a new language access initiative. At Dream in NOVA we’ve already started addressing similar issues with our bilingual volunteer corps. It takes a committed community to make a difference for thousands of residents.
