  • Excited to finally share some of the the portfolios from our last photography unit. Starting with Charles Leah - Professor at the school of social work at Columbia, photographed by Ixchel and Linda Ricard. One of the portrait posing tutorials we watched said you should try to get at least 3 looks: “Cool”, “Warm” and “Fun” - and I think they nailed all three. Plus photos of the designer Van - with street photography by Cris Morales - who’s new to Echoes and making a strong showing out of the gate. plus some portrait shots by our awesome summer camper Ixchel with help from Linda

  • We sometimes get students who don’t want to kneel down or exert too much effort in their photography because they don’t want to look silly. I often say “do you want to look cool or do you want your photos to look cool?” With KJ that’s never been an issue. When he has a vision for a shot there’s nothing that can stop him. And the pay-off always speaks for itself.

  • Help us Create New Pathways in 2025 For our end-of-year campaign, we have goal of raising $10,000 to support two exciting new initiatives. First, we're launching Echoes Professional Filmmaking Pathways: a brand new, 4-month training program to get justice-impacted young adults ready for professional freelance productions. The "Pathways" program will provide intensive production training as well as supported placements in real work-for-hire jobs, with mentoring by both older crew and industry professionals. One of the great joys at Echoes is watching a young person step into their first paid filmmaking job. It's about so much more than the money; it can be a deeply transformational experience when they realize their skills, creativity, and professionalism are being valued by the larger society. We're super excited about this program, but need your help to make it a reality. In 2025 we're also starting production on our next Emerging Adult Justice film. Over the past few years Echoes has collaborated with the Emerging Adult Justice Project created 4 powerful films on the enormous potential of applying emerging adult developmental research to our justice system. (Visit https://lnkd.in/ewqbb9Vp to watch clips.) In 2025 we are embarking on a next film diving deep into a new developmental framework for emerging adulthood which can transform how we think about this crucial population. We're looking to raise the remaining funds to make this production a success. Please consider donating today. https://lnkd.in/e9PBG-kR

  • More photos from this amazing group… a second approach to the darkness was to play with more experimental techniques like shutter dragging and light painting. Both use long exposures, and Shutter dragging is when you fire a flash in the middle to freeze the subject, while with light painting, the subject holds very still while you “draw” shapes and designs with a small flashlight or string lights. We’re having our final client day coming up on 12/11 between 4:30-6:30 and still have a few slots open. Want a free headshot or high-energy portraits? DM for details!

  • Our portrait photography unit is going strong! At first we weren’t sure how we’d deal with the early darkness this time of year - we decided to take the opportunity to teach 3-point lighting and traditional studio portrait techniques, and we’re super psyched by the results. We had our first “Client day” this past week - where participants were paired off with clients, had to first interview them to get ideas on how to capture their energy, then had 40 min to get portraits. We’re having our final client day coming up on 12/11 between 4:30-6:30 and still have a few slots open. Want a free headshot? DM for details!

  • In a final film clip for the month, our mentor Ann Adalist-Estrin expresses the central mission of Echoes’ work on parental incarceration: to tell stories, chip away at stigma, promote resiliency, and end unnecessary harm. Its also the work of See Us Support Us month and all of the great partners who Echoes has had the pleasure of working with over the last 15 years. Thank you for joining us over the 30 days, for celebrating the legacy of Ann's work, for witnessing the stories and advocacy work of the youth, and for sharing and commenting throughout the month. • Looking back at the issue of stigma around parental incarceration, we want to give a special spotlight on the Little Children Big Challenges initiative. Sesame Workshop applied their genius for early child development to create amazing resources for children and families and tackle the issue of stigma head-on. Echoes was fortunate to collaborate with sesame street on a film aimed at older teens, and in the process we had the pleasure of interviewing Sesame Street head writer Joey Mazzarino (and his alter ego Murray the Monster). Few other projects have brought the issue of parental incarceration more into the mainstream, especially with such intelligence and skill.
