Renewable Energy Power Generation

Teaming up with nature to build the most ecological wind farm yet.

About us

With Ecowende, we are at the forefront of the future as we build the most ecological wind farm yet. We want to help make a positive contribution to biodiversity and thus accelerate the large-scale roll-out of offshore wind in the Netherlands and beyond. We know that renewable energy must become more sustainable. To contribute to this, we will implement various innovations to stimulate a flourishing ecosystem and realise a minimal impact on marine mammals, birds and bats, and a vibrant marine life. Our wind farm will be located about 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast. With an installed capacity of approximately 760 MW, we can make about 3% of the current Dutch electricity demand greener. The plan is to have Ecowende fully commissioned in 2026. Follow us to learn more about Ecowende, our innovations, and latest developments!

  • 🙏 Thank you for an unforgettable year 🙏 As we reflect on 2024, we want to express our gratitude to the offshore and ecology communities, our partners and team members for what we have accomplished together. This year we completed design, started fabrication and went offshore for our ecology surveys to build the Hollandse Kust West wind park in harmony with nature. Click the link to discover our highlights of 2024 and reflect – with us - on an unforgettable year: https://lnkd.in/dWgHTHVa Together, we will fill the knowledge gap on the impact of offshore wind parks on sea life, both above and under water. We need to understand what works and what does not work for the ecosystem. As we look to 2025, I am confident that together we can make a net positive impact on nature offshore by building on and sharing our lessons with the world. #teamingupwithnature #teamwork #offshorewind #hollandsekustwest #energytransition Shell Eneco Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. • 📢 Partner announcement 📢 Ecowende chooses Buss Ports for state-of-the-art port infrastructure as marshalling port in the Eemshaven Buss Terminal Eemshaven BV will serve as our wind turbine marshalling port, offering over 200,000 square metres of storage and handling capacity for the components needed to build the wind farm. That involves 52 sets of Vestas V236 turbines, nacelles, blades, and towers, totaling more than 455 individual components and a combined weight of over 100,000 tons. Marc Wegman, Managing Director of Buss Terminal Eemshaven: “Buss Ports has a proven track record as a leading offshore wind logistics partner. With our state-of-the-art facilities, experienced teams, and strong partners like Ecowende, we will continue to support the growth of offshore wind by enabling projects such as Hollandse Kust West.” Buss Ports works closely with Ecowende to develop a highly efficient and effective logistical solution for our project. Folkert Visser, Project Director at Ecowende: “Ecowende is pleased to team up with Buss for the marshalling of its Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) components. The strategic location of the harbour, the spacious facilities which Buss continues to invest in and its experienced team, make Buss a logical fit for Ecowende. Due to its ecological program, there is significant variability across the Ecowende WTG’s. We have confidence that Buss is able to support the need for flexibility that may come with this setup.” Read the full news article on our website 💻 https://lnkd.in/dpiRW5Uw #teamingupwithnature #eemshaven #marshallingharbour #logistics #offshorewind #GroningenSeaports 📸 Photo credit: Buss Terminal Eemshaven

  • 🔦 Partner in the spotlight: TKF 🔦 As a partner of Ecowende, TKF (BV Twentsche Kabelfabriek) is responsible for the development, production and delivery of inter-array cable and connectivity solutions to distribute the generated power from the 52 offshore wind turbines towards the TenneT substation. A connection that needs to be reliable, robust and sustainable, in the delicate but challenging marine environment. The TKF cable design specifically takes into account the use of sustainable materials in order to limit the impact on the vulnerable underwater environment as much as possible. No lead or bitumen is used. @Walter Heerts, Business Line Director Subsea at TKF: “"It's great to be able to work on this project with the same mission, empowering a sustainable future for the generations to come. We can only connect sustainably together." • 📹🦇 Recording bats and birds at night to train AI 🦇 A team of DHI biologists recently collected field data on bats’ and birds’ movements at night. The data will be used to train DHI’s MUSE artificial intelligence (AI) solution to automatically discriminate between bats and birds at night. As some bat species migrate between the Netherlands and the UK, they risk encountering and potentially colliding with turbines in an offshore windfarm. In fact, though there is a lot of knowledge about bats on land, there is still much to learn about bats at sea. As such, we want to gain as much knowledge as possible about these species to better understand how one should mitigate the impact on bats at sea. Innovations from DHI, such as MUSE, will support our monitoring and research programme in our HKW offshore wind park. The field team of DHI biologists borrowed a cooled thermal camera, and subcontractor Circle Consult helped the team set up the advanced equipment for several nights in one of Denmark’s bat hotspots in the region Lolland-Falster. DHI MUSE AI experts will use the recordings to train the AI to automatically distinguish between bats and small birds in low light. This will eventually help to reduce bat collisions. 📰 Bionieuws on impact offshore wind turbines on birds 🗞   In a recent interview with Koen Moons in Bionieuws, Ecowende colleagues Hermione van Zutphen and Eldina S.alkanovic share their thoughts on the effects of offshore wind turbines on birds. While progress has been made in better understanding its ecological impact, there is still relatively little known about how offshore wind turbines effect bird populations.   Hermione and Eldina emphasize the need for robust scientific research to better understand these effects. Ecowende will perform this research during the construction and operation phase of the Hollandse Kust West (HKW) wind farm. Pioneering with eco-innovations and gathering more data will help ensure that both the energy transition and the protection of wildlife can go hand in hand.   As Hermione points out, “In the HKW tender, the Dutch government has placed a strong focus on ecological measures. For birds, we have designed a bird corridor and increased the rotor height of some of the turbines. So, both horizontally and vertically, we are making space for seabirds.” Eldina adds: “We are also going to implement a combination of radar, cameras, and Artificial Intelligence. Together with DHI, Robin Radar Systems and Wedge Global (MIDO) we are implementing bird monitoring and recognition systems prior, during and after construction. We use radar to detect birds and camera to follow the trajectory of the birds. AI helps to identify the species of bird. This gives us more knowledge about whether and how we can prevent collisions for certain species.”   Below the full interview (in Dutch) in Bionieuws to learn more about this topic.
