From November 19-22, 2024, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) Pan-American Conference brought together regional experts, policymakers, and advocates in Minneapolis, Minnesota to advance suicide prevention efforts. The USAID IDEA project, implemented by EDC, is proud to support the Caribbean Coalition and partners where they led a session on decriminalizing suicide in the Caribbean, reducing stigma, and contributing to advocacy national strategies for the Bahamas, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad & Tobago. Together, we're building a more inclusive future for mental health in the region. #SuicidePrevention #MentalHealth #IASP #CaribbeanAdvocacy

Congratulations to the South Sudanese youth who recently graduated from a training program in business and entrepreneurship skills through the EDC-implemented USAID Youth Empowerment Activity! Thank you to Ambassador Michael J. Adler and USAID Mission Director David Thompson for attending the graduation ceremony!
November 29, 2024 -Juba: It was such an honor to welcome the U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan and the USAID Mission Director as they accepted our invitation to award over 190 youth who successfully completed their four-and-a-half-month training program in business and peacebuilding skills in Juba. The USAID Youth Empowerment Activity, implemented by edc.org in partnership with national NGOs and CSOs, continues to provide essential literacy and numeracy, work readiness, "Be Your Own Boss," market skills, and vocational training to youth aged 15-29 across South Sudan. We are proud to have offered a "second-chance" opportunity to 15,000 young people to acquire skills in reading and writing, and starting their own businesses over the past two years. With 7,000 more youth now joining the program, we expect to reach a total of 25,000 young women and men by 2026.

Literacy skills can alleviate gender-based violence (GBV): When women learn to read and write, they are better able to understand their rights and challenge cultural practices that lead to GBV. In addition, literacy classrooms provide a safe space to express themselves and share their experiences. The USAID Let’s Learn Together! (LLT) Project in the DRC, implemented by EDC, is teaching literacy to the parents of children in the project’s schools and communities. Here, an LLT instructor teaches reading to a class of both men and women in Kinshasa. In honor of the UN Women’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign, we celebrate literacy as a valuable tool in this struggle for women’s rights. #GBV #WomensRights #16DaysofActivism

Children with disabilities often miss out on quality education as schools are not always equipped to meet their needs. On this International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we explore how education can become more inclusive for learners with disabilities. Risper Osoro, a teacher at Racecourse Primary School, shares how special training for teachers under the USAID Kenya Primary Literacy Program, together with the Ministry of Education of Kenya, has greatly improved the learning experience for her students. #IDPwD #PeopleWithDisability

Heidi Kar, Ph.D., M.H.S. and Simon Richmond with EDC's Mental Health for All program discuss the potential harms and benefits of students forming "friendships" with AI chatbots. While Kar warns these relationships can be unhealthy, she and Richmond see opportunities for AI to provide a safe space for students to learn about mental health and improve their real-world relationships, if designed thoughtfully.
