I wrote an invited piece about motivated empathy and the 2024 U.S. Presidential election. Just in time for turkey day politics discussions with families.The key idea is that people may not want empathy as much as it seems. But... that means we should reinforce our desires and willingness to empathize now more than ever. Especially to battle a growing norm of callousness and schadenfreude. It isn't an argument for cross-partisan empathy though. All the talk of common ground may sand down moral disagreements and undercut the importance of cultivating motivations to care for the most marginalized, who are more at risk. What a privilege and honor to participate in the Transforming Evidence Network and WT Grant meetings in Cape Town. The Evidence-to-Impact Collaborative has wrapped its third year of the Venture Equity Project, led by NASDAQ Entrepreneurial Center and partnering with Heartland Forward. Our collective research found that these states lead in entrepreneurial equity innovation: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Maryland, North Carolina, and Texas. The criteria for these rankings were the rates of high-quality entrepreneurship in each state. “High-quality” entrepreneurship was defined by comparing the average income of underrepresented entrepreneurs to the average income in their state or area. This fall, Daniel Max Crowley, Meg Small and Gillian Sommerville of Penn State's Evidence-to-Impact Collaborative (EIC) attended events in New York City and Washington, D.C. to present this year’s work to a variety of stakeholders, including legislators, advocacy groups, and entrepreneurs. Our EIC team has partnered with the NASDAQ Entrepreneurial Center for the past 3 years to evaluate, build, and expand the data infrastructure that is typically used to explain how entrepreneurs are doing. Our goal is to create a landscape that considers the “whole entrepreneur” -- not only their business metrics, but their social, physical, and mental health. What a great seminar on prevention research at the PRC! Last week, I had the privilege of attending a great seminar at the PRC where Jessica Wolfe Connor shared valuable insights on effective project management. Jessica shared some key responsibilities of a successful project manager including: Project Planning Team Management Budget & Timeline Management Data Management Regulatory Compliance Communication Risk Management One of the major takeaways was the importance of involving the Project Manager early in the project lifecycle. By doing so, PMs can identify potential issues, “patch holes”, and ensure the practicality of the project before things go off track. As Jessica put it: “PMs will tell you upfront before a trainwreck.” We also heard from other experienced PMs who shared their unique backgrounds and responsibilities. It was inspiring to see how project managers can take on many different roles and adapt to diverse project needs. Key themes throughout the seminar included the vital importance of trust, collaboration, and communication—all foundational elements for a successful project.
