This month, I had a wonderful chance to team up with the amazing G1-G2 educators at Bahrain Bayan School. We focused on boosting literacy instruction by blending science content with reading skills standards, while the KG2 team worked on giving feedback and assessing student writing. Here are some highlights: 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Combining science and reading lessons, we save classroom time and help students grasp both subjects even better. 𝗪𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱-𝗔𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱𝘀: Using whole class read-alouds is a great way to build content knowledge and reading skills simultaneously. This method keeps everyone engaged and helps make connections between different subjects simpler. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Picking the right texts that can be used across several lessons helps create continuity in learning, leading to richer discussions and a deeper dive into the topics. 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀-𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Aligning learning objectives across different classes helps ensure everyone is on the same page, promoting teamwork among teachers and enhancing the overall learning experience. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸-𝗜𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴: Scheduling regular one-on-one conferring with clearly articulated goals helps both regularly assess progress and set achievable writing goals. Screener? Diagnostic? CBM? Outcome measures? Data... If that sounds a bit dry, you really missed out at The American School of Barcelona! The amazing teams of teachers brought their questions, ideas, and enthusiasm, as we dove into understanding the differences between these assessments, which tools would best fit their students, and how we could use the data to reach kids exactly where they are. With the help of their fantastic literacy coach Nicole Sanchez, we created a practical "if-then" conferring sheet based on Scarborough’s Reading Rope to help teachers quickly find the right focus areas to teach. We even tried it out with students and explored how these conferring moments could also serve as a way to monitor progress. The energy and engagement from the teachers were incredible as they jumped right into a coaching moment when they least expected it. Our lively discussions afterward only proved that we learn best through doing. When we anchor our work in data, as Matt Burns says, we shift from activities to meaningful instruction! A big thank you to Nicole Sanchez, Dr. Johanna Cena, and Kristen MacConnell, Ph.D for your leadership, guidance, knowledge, and smiles. I immediately felt "at home" at ASB and cannot wait to return to continue this work.
