Nurturing stronger familias to live out their dreams!

About us

El Futuro is a one-of-a-kind place where Spanish speaking immigrants can access culturally-sensitive mental health services. We are a community-based program, founded as a volunteer effort in 2001 to meet the otherwise unmet need for bilingual mental health services for the growing Latino immigrant community in North Carolina. Since forming as a nonprofit in 2004, and despite drastic reductions in public funding for community-based mental health care, El Futuro has grown to become North Carolina’s trusted resource for trauma-informed, culturally-sensitive mental health services. Our staff and agency have received numerous honors including the 2006 Mental Health Association in North Carolina Heroes in the Fight Award, 2007 North Carolina Latino Diamante Award, and 2007 Citizen Award from the Independent Weekly. El Futuro is also an AHEC Center for Excellence. Our most meaningful achievements, however, are when families grow stronger and get back to their dreams for the future that brought them to our community in the first place. We’re honored to know that our number one source of referrals is from friends and family of clients, reflecting the confianza (trust) we’ve built with Latino families over the years. Today, with clinics in both Durham and Siler City and a growing effort to improve the quality of mental health care for Latino families across the state through La Mesita (El Futuro’s Latino Mental Health Provider Network), our mission is to nurture stronger familias to live out their dreams. We hope you’ll join us in this important work.

  • We are happy to share the results of recent work with @NorthCarolinaInstituteofMedicine to develop this landscape analysis highlighting the mental health gaps and opportunities for immigrants across NC. The work of the Immigrant Solidarity Network included engaging an Advisory Council – composed of individuals with detailed knowledge of immigrant services and mental health needs – whose insights have expanded the understanding of the needs of diverse immigrant communities across the state and increased awareness of the available resources to support them throughout North Carolina. Happy Gratitude Tuesday! (Let's rename it!) My friend and coworker Mary took this picture of me when I was speaking to our staff recently. I was wearing a traditional garment from Peru (it was the day after Halloween and we were supposed to dress up) but Mary said I looked like a prophet! Ha! The quote on the screen is from Mother Teresa. The sentiment is one I share. My heart is filled with gratitude for the incredible community that makes @El Futuro what it is. 🙏To our dedicated staff: Your unwavering commitment to providing compassionate, culturally responsive care is the cornerstone of our mission. Every day, you make a profound difference in the lives of those we serve. 🙏To our amazing supporters: Your generosity and belief in our work empower us to reach further and help more families. We couldn't do it without you. 🙏 And to the community members who trust us with their stories and journeys: Your resilience and courage inspire us beyond words. Gratitude is a powerful force in mental health—it fosters resilience, builds stronger connections, and promotes healing.  At El Futuro, we see firsthand how embracing gratitude and community-driven care transforms lives. Wishing everyone a "Gratitude Tuesday" filled with warmth, thankfulness, and the joy of community.

As North Carolina's immigrant population grows, policy must take into account that immigrant populations can face unique challenges and stressors that impact mental well-being. Understanding and addressing these specific needs is vital to ensuring equitable mental health care. We are happy to share the results of recent work with El Futuro to develop this landscape analysis illuminating the mental health gaps and opportunities for immigrants across our state. In total, 20 interviews were conducted with 21 individuals. Interviewees represented a variety of professional roles and immigrant backgrounds; however, a majority of interviewees represented a Latino immigrant and/or ethnic identity.
