New cover for Angewandte Chemie: a CuO particle in action, surrounded by cavitation bubbles, acoustic waves, and a thermal effect 💥😲 🫧 This study, led by Prince Nana Amaniampong, Ph.D. - HDR, MRSC, introduces an exciting new design for CuO particles that could transform energy use in chemical reactions. These particles, designed with special gas-stabilizing sites, work as cavitation nuclei and catalysts, focusing energy exactly where it's needed—on the catalyst surface. Researchers demonstrate how specially designed CuO particles focus cavitation energy on their surface, achieving high temperatures (360 °C) for efficient oxidative reactions, while reducing energy use, costs, and CO2 emissions. The image depicts the fascinating world of #choanoflagellates – tiny organisms that are the closest living relatives of animals 🐾 The featured article focuses on Salpingoeca rosetta, a species that forms rosette-shaped colonies. Our new creative image! 🥊Classical learning vs. Operant learning in Science Advances The research by eyal rozenfeld and Moshe Parnas from Tel Aviv University shows that two types of #learning: classical (associating cues with outcomes) and operant (learning from actions and their results) — rely on distinct brain pathways🧠. Interestingly, they can’t occur simultaneously, as interference between the pathways disrupts learning. The brain's "navigation center" actively manages this balance, ensuring one pathway takes priority. The fruit fly (used in the study) on our funny image imagines a boxing match between a dog🐶 and a pigeon🐦. Two “fighters” symbolize the opposing forces of classical and operant learning competing for dominance in the brain. The fly’s thought bubble hints at the selective processes required to prevent interference between these systems. 🎉✨ Starting the new year with beautiful covers: Ella's artwork is featured on the cover of Nano Letters! 🌟 This fascinating study by Peter Christensen and Sang-Hyun Oh from University of Minnesota introduces Nano-QuIC, a breakthrough in Parkinson’s disease diagnostics. Nano-QuIC uses #nanoparticles to detect misfolded α-synuclein — a hallmark of Parkinson’s — in blood samples, overcoming the limitations of current tests that require spinal fluid. It’s 100 times more sensitive than existing methods, paving the way for noninvasive, blood-based testing for early disease detection.
