At our Ellipsis holiday dinner we said a (partial) good-bye to one of the true legends of the #IR game - our MD, Bob Jones. I say “partial” because we are thrilled that he will be staying on to consult with us as he devotes more time to his fast-growing family, including 10 grandkids! Bob has been an enormous asset to the development and growth of our firm over eight years. Our partnership was the product of both odd and fortunate circumstances: a role reversal of sorts. When I met Bob in the … uh, let’s say the late-early-mid ‘90s to protect my fast-vanishing youthfulness, Bob was a feared and very successful partner at the venerable Morgen-Walke Associates. I was a new account executive who within weeks of starting was already questioning his career choice. After a night of beers and laughs at our summer party, Bob became a friend and mentor and I found my path at the firm. While I eventually moved on, Bob saw MWA through to the end as its last CEO after its sale. He became a successful in-house #IRO at a peer to one of my clients, which guaranteed we’d keep seeing each other. Years later, when I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey Bob was there with timely advice, occasionally checking in on me and sharing his wizened views on how to attract, serve and keep clients. After a couple of years, we both realized he could be a huge asset to Ellipsis, and there was the role reversal - a mentor taking a leadership position at my firm. Of the three objectives we aligned on for his role, the third was, “be straight with me and don’t let me #$%@ this up”. It quickly became the most important of the three. After a few quarters together, Bob came to me with some advice. He said I couldn’t bring in the business and service it all too; that he was going to roll up his sleeves and manage a few particularly time-consuming engagements, even though it was well below his station. As someone who tends toward perfectionist and takes seriously having his name on the proverbial door, this was something I absolutely needed to hear. Bob saw what a small, seat-of-the-pants firm needed, and it was his experience and get-it-done style more than it was his stature. That’s a sacrifice you don’t see very often in business, and one for which I’ll always be grateful. I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way, but none catastrophic, and I owe that to a combination of Bob’s guidance, our team, and sheer luck. If you don’t know Bob, he’s a Hell’s Kitchen native who brings a blend of confidence, conviction, humbleness and loyalty that is sadly in very short supply in the world today, and especially in our chosen profession. He’s made Ellipsis – and me – smarter, better and prepared to win in the years to come. Thank you, Bob. We won’t bug you … too much.

Hi all – sharing a quick but important update from our Ellipsis team. Super-excited and humbled to have the awesome Ronald Clark join us as senior advisor. He and I have so many mutual connections I’ve lost count, so I’m sure many of you taking the time to read this already know Ron personally and know he’s the real deal. Ron and I have a strongly held, shared view of the role of strategic #IR and #capitalmarkets #communications in supporting and enhancing value, starting at #IPO but even more critically for companies hitting the inevitable growing pains on the journey from SMID-cap and up. We also share the view that this market is poorly served and that’s why we’re combining forces. Please join me in welcoming Ron and we look forward to sharing more!

As #earnings season comes into full swing, many #IRO, #finance heads, and #CFO are getting their arms around their companies #consensus estimates as they look at their results and potential #guidance. Although these very important consensus numbers are universally accepted by #WallStreet as a measuring stick, there is still some mystery around them as they can be inconsistent across providers and their calculations can be unclear - we are here to help.
