  • People in developing nations face numerous barriers to achieving prosperity and stability. Lack of access to credit and savings further prohibits progress. Traditional banks are unlikely to issue loans to poor people as the risks of defaulting are too great. When lenders do finance the poor, often the financial institution imposes high interest rates to ensure they are not at a loss. Is there an alternative to going into debt to get out of poverty? Jeffrey Ashe, Director of Grassroots Financial Action, believes that community driven savings groups are a powerful conduit to the generation of financial stability and prosperity in developing nations. Ashe states, “While our institutional world is governed by laws, the informal economy is based on trust and time-tested traditions of mutual support decentralized into small groups, families, and communities.” Learn more about his work and insights here: https://lnkd.in/gTAB8t4J #SustainableDevelopmentGoals #LocallyLedDevelopment #ROSCAS #EconomicDevelopment

  • The media often reports that Congress and the US president have approved large sums of money to be given to other nations in support of humanitarian crises around the globe.  What the American people might not realize is how much, or rather how little, of the federal budget is actually spent on foreign interests. It’s true that the US typically contributes the highest total aid dollars globally – yet it’s not the highest donor nation per capita when measuring for gross national income But how much is really being sent abroad and where does it go? • Haiti, notoriously nick-named, “the Republic of NGOs” has more charities and NGOs per capita than any other nation globally and yet remains the poorest in the western hemisphere. Unfortunately, prolonged aid has not helped this Caribbean Island to progress economically or in other ways – and in fact has in many cased exacerbated poverty. Partners in Progress is helping to turn the tide on this reality and support locally-led solutions. Their program is so effective that even amidst the pandemic in 2021, farmers in their network were able to provide relief provisions to other Haitians who were affected by hurricane Matthew. • Supporting local communities in undeveloped nations to prosper is the ideal. However, when people are struggling to feed themselves due to numerous factors beyond their control from poverty, conflict, and climate change, investing in development may not be effective without ensuring certain basic needs are met first. Rise Against Hunger has developed an effective third-way model to bridge the gap between relief to development as they engage communities to learn about climate-resilient agricultural practices. They understand that agricultural development takes time, so they offer a “safety net” program by providing highly nutritious meals to schools and communities while they are implementing food-smart agricultural practices. Furthermore, they ensure that the produce is nutritionally diverse to ensure communities not only are adequately fed, but also are provided essential nutrients to thrive. • #Sudan and #South Sudan have known civil unrest for nearly half a century. War makes investing in development very challenging if not impossible. Despite the odds, Lift Up the Vulnerable (LUV) has done an exceptional job of empowering local leaders to cultivate changemakers in their own communities – event amidst conflict. Peter Lomago who leads of LUVs partner organizations shared a compelling example of the power of the community and their local government to stand up to rebel leaders in their area during a fight. Mr. Lomago affirmed, “We were protected because the chiefs are stake-holders in our institution, and because they and the government understand the value of the school to the community.” As a result, the children, staff, and property all remained unharmed. Having lived through war for most of his life, Peter ardently believes that development not only is possible, but is crucial for human flourishing in his country. He stated, “we cannot give money or relief [long-term]. We must give long-lasting skills to give a foundational approach to improve their communities – this will help the community to flourish.” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gYPeN4Tm #LocallyLedDevelopment #SouthSudan #Humanitarian Audrey Walters-Moore
