That’s a wrap! ✨ This week Sweden’s Minister for Migration, Johan Forssell visited Ottawa to engage in a fruitful dialogue with a range of officials, experts and businesses on migration issues, in particular about Canada’s policies and experiences regarding talent attraction and high-skilled labour migration. During his visit, the Minister met with his Canadian counterpart Marc Miller and Canadian officials from the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada / Immigration, Réfugiés et Citoyenneté Canada, Emploi et Développement social Canada (EDSC) / Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), as well as Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and SSHRC-CRSH. He also met with the Chair and Vice Chair of the House of Commons of Canada Chambre des communes du Canada Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. Johan Forssell further exchanged with think tanks and local non-profit organisations such as Canadian Global Affairs Institute and the Swedish Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The Minister interacted with Swedish companies in Ottawa/Kanata to learn about their work in attracting and retaining talent in sectors where specific skills are in high-demand Ericsson, Syntronic - A Global Design House. Site-visits were made to Invest Ottawa and World Skills Employment Centre to see first-hand how local non-profits work to support newcomers to Canada integrate into the Canadian labour market. The visit was yet another example of the deepening and thriving relationship between Sweden and Canada. We look forward to building on the positive outcomes of this visit and the continued partnership also in this area of work between Sweden and Canada.

🌟 Celebrating Excellence: Sweden’s long-time serving Honorary Consul General in Toronto Receives the Royal Order of the Polar Star 🌟 After a long and distinguished service as Sweden’s Honorary Consul General in Toronto from 2002 to 2024, Lars Henriksson has been awarded the prestigious Royal Order of the Polar Star (Nordstjärneorden)! Lars Henriksson was decorated by Ambassador Signe Burgstaller in a ceremony that took place in Toronto on 14 November, with Lars’ close family, friends and former colleagues in attendance. Present was also his successor as Honorary Consul General in Toronto, Lars Ruuth, who was officially welcomed in his new role, as well as the Honorary Consular Officer at the Swedish Consulate General in Toronto, Susanne van Rossem. Instituted in 1748, the Royal Order recognizes outstanding personal endeavours for Sweden or Swedish interests, especially within public activities and the successful performance of public duties. The order is awarded on the recommendation of the Government Offices in Sweden and by decision of His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf. This honor is a testament to Lars Henriksson’s exceptional contributions and dedication to serve the interests of Sweden throughout his 22 years as Honorary Consul General in Toronto. We wish him well as he now enjoys his retirement! 🌍 Last week, the Nordic Deputies travelled to British Columbia and Yukon on a joint Nordic Diplomacy mission. Supported by The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council, the visit included a focus on strengthening commercial ties between BC, Yukon, and the Nordic region. The delegation's agenda included discussions with leaders and senior officials from the Government of British Columbia, the Government of Yukon, and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency/ Agence canadienne de développement économique du Nord on opportunities for cooperation in economic development, renewable energy & decarbonization, technology & innovation, mining, forestry🌲 , circular economy and health care. The agenda also included discussions with a productive trade and investment roundtable with the Government of Yukon, the Whitehorse Chamber Of Commerce, the Yukon Chamber of Commerce, the Yukon Chamber of Mines, and the Tourism Industry Association of the Yukon (TIA Yukon). The delegation also enjoyed great visits and discussions with Yukon Music, the Yukon Fine Arts Center, and COAST (Centre for Ocean Applied Sustainable Technologies). Opportunities for deeper cooperation in the above areas were highlighted during the visit. We look forward to what is to come! Another great day for Sweden Canada relations! Yesterday, an agreement was signed between Ericsson Canada and the Government of Canada for a major expanded R&D investment of $79.1 million under the Strategic Innovation Fund to support Ericsson’s $634.8 million project to advance 5G technologies for next-generation telecommunications networks, with research to take place in #Ottawa and #Montreal. Ambassador Signe Burgstaller was honoured to join Ministers François-Philippe Champagne and Jenna Sudds and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe along with Ericsson’s CEO Börje Ekholm, Ericsson's President and CEO North America Yossi Cohen, and Ericsson’s President in Canada Jeanette Irekvist in the celebration of this exciting milestone. Exciting news! Join us in welcoming Lars Ruuth as the new Swedish Honorary Consul General for Toronto. Lars is a Chalmers University of Technology 🎓 graduate who’s lived in Canada for almost 2 decades 🍁 Lars is an experienced business leader in the manufacturing sector. Outside of work he is an avid reader, history buff and dog person. We recently sat down with Lars to discuss his new role, ambitions, and expectations. Here's what he shared with us: Q: What are you most looking forward to in your new role? "I am truly honored to represent Sweden as Honorary Consul General. I'm excited to continue the excellent work of my predecessor, Lars Henriksson. There are fantastic activities to support, and I also hope to bring my skills, experience, and connections to new initiatives in business and culture.🌟 My intention is to have a meaningful impact in this role. I'm also a big hockey fan 🏒 (Go Leafs!) and while I have met some Swedish players here, I hope to meet more of them in person and engage them to further promote Sweden in Canada." Q: What do you see as the most exciting areas of collaboration between Sweden and Canada in the coming years? "Firstly, both countries share a strong commitment to sustainability.🌍 Sweden is a global leader in many aspects, and Canada is serious about improving its performance and global standing, creating a great environment for stronger collaboration.
