Last but most important, we have Lindsey Parrish back with Jessie Lamb, Vice President of Strat Property Management, Inc.Jessie shares her story of growth and evolution within the self-storage industry and serves as a true inspiration to anyone looking to forge their own path in self-storage operations.
Jenn Shaver and I, Lindsey Parrish, are thrilled that our first podcast features a female powerhouse in the self-storage industry—Jessie Lamb.
Jessie is the Vice President of Strat Property Management, Inc. She is an incredibly talented and unique individual. I could have talked to her for hours—and almost did! But don’t worry, we’ll be releasing these in short segments.
We start with Jessie as she shares her experience and insights into the work she’s currently doing with remote facilities.

Facility Manager Hiring & Development
When hiring a facility manager, we often set the expectation that they will handle a wide range of responsibilities, requiring a diverse set of skills. We ask them to be good at everything, which can lead to confusion about priorities and cause them to favor certain tasks over others. This approach makes further development even more challenging.
It’s like throwing a beginner into the deep end to learn how to swim. Rather than producing great swimmers, they end up focusing all their efforts on simply not drowning. This on-the-job training style is so common in our industry that it’s almost seen as a rite of passage.
Instead, we prefer to invite new recruits to use their introductory period as a chance to discover their “Super Power.” This approach encourages managers to try everything and give it their best shot. Failures or poor results during this period are not signs of a bad hiring decision. We do not expect them to master everything in such a short time.
Our goal is to identify the skills that come naturally to the employee based on their experience and disposition. We can also spot tasks they are close to mastering with just a bit more encouragement and identify areas where we need to provide additional support, setting smaller progress targets to help them succeed.
This method builds a partnership between the manager and the employee to achieve the best results over time. It also helps us identify where to invest in ongoing development across the team, which members can serve as mentors in their areas of expertise, and how to improve the hiring process by understanding which skills are already covered and where gaps remain.
