The Renewable Energy for Sustainable Ukraine project officially opened a solar power plant at a medical facility in Rivne region. The solar power plant installed at the hospital was built in two stages – for the outpatient department and the main building – and will provide reliable power supply for the medical facility. ▫️ Polyclinic department – 90 solar panels, solar station capacity 52.65 kW ▫️ The main hospital building - 124 solar panels, the capacity of the solar station is 73.16 kW. This configuration will provide a total cost savings of more than 23,000 euros per year. Cooperation is an important element of building strong relationships. This project was a unique experience for our foundation as well. Thanks to fruitful cooperation and the successful experience of co-financing the Rivne City Council, the community completed the second stage of construction of the solar power plant. During the visit of our charitable foundation to the region, a round table was also held with the participation of representatives of local governments of the Rivne region. The fruitful discussion emphasized the importance of using renewable energy sources (RES) in Ukrainian communities and community advocacy as an example of successful RES implementation. ______ This is one of the 5 facilities we are building as part of the Renewable Energy for Sustainable Ukraine project, which is being implemented by a consortium of NGOs together with GIZ Ukraine on behalf of the German government.

Russia’s full-scale invasion brought enormous damages and losses, but Ukraine has been and will be rebuilding. Amid wartime challenges, Ukraine is proving that sustainable recovery is not just possible — it’s essential. At the ReBuild Ukraine event, "Green Reconstruction of Ukraine’s Communities: Key Lessons from 2023-2024 Recovery Projects," we shared how solar solutions are driving our path forward. "The work that our Foundation and other NGOs carry out in local communities has already set precedents for how Ukraine can restore and transform its energy infrastructure. These examples demonstrate that the recovery process can include modern, sustainable practices, and that it is necessary to work in synergy," said Alina Sushchyk, manager of international partnerships, during the ReBuild Ukraine conference in Warsaw. What the rebuild of Ukraine is about in after almost 3 years of russian war in Ukraine? 1.Duality. Despite ongoing war, we need to perform rebuilding activities. Green reconstruction is on, but not yet at needed scale. 2.Renewable solution as solar PV with energy storages is being implementing to contribute solving current energy crisis specially for critical infrastructure. Investing in solar PV systems and energy-efficient infrastructure reduces Ukraine's reliance on centralized grids and fossil fuels. 3.Partnerships, grants, financing. Long-term financing provides predictability, allowing local governments and NGOs to focus on high-impact projects rather than short-term fixes. 4. Human capital issue requires new approaches of people reskilling. The communities has the huge potential of labour force. The education of local specialists and the presence of local energy managers helps foster strategic and sustainable recovery. To rebuild Ukraine sustainably, we must foster global collaboration. Donors, international organizations, and financial institutions have a unique opportunity to contribute as agents of change. Your support isn’t just rebuilding infrastructure — it’s rebuilding lives, empowering communities, and shaping a resilient, sustainable future for Ukraine.

Board member of 🇺🇦Ecoaction - Centre for Environmental Initiatives | Policy analyst, Green reconstruction of Ukraine at IISD
🌿 Our ReBuild Ukraine event "Green Reconstruction of Ukraine’s Communities: Key Lessons from 2023-2024 Recovery Projects" was a powerful reminder that even amidst wartime challenges, Ukraine is taking steps toward sustainable recovery. 💡 Key takeaways from the discussion: 1️⃣ Green reconstruction is happening, driven by NGOs like NGO Ecoclub, Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation, Vision Zero, CEE Bankwatch Network, Ecoaction - Centre for Environmental Initiatives 🇺🇦, as well as Nefco - the Nordic Green Bank and the Energy Efficiency Fund of Ukraine. However, the #buildbackbetter principle is not yet being implemented at scale, as reconstruction usually prioritizes speed over long-term sustainability. 2️⃣ What does sustainable reconstruction look like? > Use of green technologies like solar PV systems with battery storage or heat pumps for critical infrastructure and housing. > Achieving higher #energyefficiency standards than the current national requirements. > Responsible handling of hazardous materials like asbestos during construction. 3️⃣ Challenges on the ground: > Communities across Ukraine are eager for sustainable & green projects, but resources and capacity are limited. > Long-term financial instruments, grants, and low-interest loans are urgently needed. > The presence of local energy managers can make a significant difference, enabling communities to plan strategic reconstruction & recovery efforts. 4️⃣ Beyond buildings – a gap in sustainable infrastructure: > In areas like transport infrastructure, green reconstruction remains theoretical. > Bridges and roads are still built using outdated standards and technologies, overusing materials, and lacking proper planning or environmental impact assessments—a situation exacerbated by martial law provisions. 🎯 The way forward: To truly build back better, Ukraine needs a comprehensive approach to green reconstruction, partnerships, financial instruments, capacity-building and stronger adherence to sustainability principles in all sectors. The existing green reconstruction solutions & approaches need to be scaled up. A big thank you to all our the speakers and participants Viktor Zagreba, Julia Shevchuk, Yehor Fareniuk, Nataliia Lytvyn, Alina Sushchyk, Mariia Lukianova for their insights and to the communities, organisations, and donors working tirelessly for a greener, more resilient Ukraine! 🌱 International Institute for Sustainable Development buildukrainebackbetter.org #RebuildUkraine #RebuildUkraineGreen #Sustainability #Resilience

This week at #COP29 I was honoured to participate in the panel session titled “Promoting and Supporting Women’s Leadership for Effective Climate Action and an Inclusive Just Transition,” hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security and the Nizami Ganjavi International Center. First and atmost, sharing the panel with H.H. Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, H.E. María Fernanda Espinosa, Dr. Edda Aradottir, Shivna Majmudar, Mwanahamisi Singano, and the moderator Amb. Melanne Verveer was the biggest inspiration at this COP29. These outstanding female leaders are bringing change the lives of people locally and worldwide for a better, sustainable future. Leaders who are empowering the female leadership globally by their example and hard work on the access to finances for women entrepreneurs, innovations, education for women and climate change mitigation and adaptation measure at crisis and war. At my speech I emphasized that War in Ukraine is devastating, but it gives the opportunity to women to redefine themselves and their potential to take a leadership path at the renewable sector in Ukraine. We need to give opportunities, support and educate them and that will accelerate the development of Ukraine now and at the rebuilding time. Thank you for the invitation Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security Christina Vetter, Helen Rocker. Energy Act for Ukraine Foundation #climatechange #cop29 #womenempowerement
