Transforming Learning, Transforming Lives

About us

Envision Education's mission is to transform the lives of students - especially those who will be the first in their family to attend college - by preparing them for success in college, career, and life. This mission is grounded in the urgency to create opportunities for first-generation college-going students, so that they have access to an education that will fundamentally change the trajectory of their lives. Envision’s Portfolio Defense model accomplishes this by giving students, particularly those who are historically underserved, the academic and social-emotional skills they need to first get into college and then persist until they earn a degree. Simply put, ours is an equity mission. Envision Education was co-founded by Daniel McLaughlin, a former Senior Research Associate at WestEd, and Bob Lenz, a nationally recognized school reform leader and Project-Based Learning expert. Envision began operations as a 501(c)(3) charter school management organization in June 2002. Today, Envision Education runs five small, high-performing urban public schools (two middle schools and three high schools) in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Envision Schools integrate a challenging curriculum that requires all students to complete the A-G Common Core coursework, ensuring that they are eligible and prepared to attend a four-year university. Our educators also create project-based assignments that challenge students to use the 21st Century Skills, of thinking critically, solving problems resourcefully, and collaborating productively, that are needed to thrive in college, in future careers, and in life. Building on the success of the schools, Envision created a consultancy division in 2010 called Envision Learning Partners (ELP), to transform the educational experience for students across the country. Using the Envision Schools model, ELP works with teachers and leaders throughout the United States to create vibrant schools and engage students deeply in their own learning.

Our goal is to raise $25K this year to help raise funds for our students to visit colleges and universities both locally and nationally. Our college counselors curate incredible experiences for our students at UCs, CSUs, private colleges, and HBCUs across the country. These trips can get quite expensive as the costs for travel, lodging, and food add up. Over the years, many of our graduates have attributed their push to apply and matriculate to college because of their visits to campuses as early as freshman year. Please consider donating to our “Visualizing the Future” campaign this holiday season. Note that over 90% of our graduates go off to college each year and these visits play a huge part in our college going culture. Check out some of the colleges and universities that our students from the Class of 2024 are attending and consider donating: https://lnkd.in/gcuPn8af

Ruth Chung Wei, ELP's Director of Research & Innovation, presented at this year's Aurora Institute Symposium alongside two school leaders, two students/graduates of inclusive, competency-based schools, and three researchers responsible for documenting the characteristics of the schools’ inclusive learning environments in case studies completed in June 2024. School leaders and graduates from two schools were highlighted in ELP’s Learning Differences study shared what it was like to work in or attend schools where close relationships with caring staff and individualized supports fostered students’ well being and a sense of belonging. Graduates also cited advisory, and opportunities to collaborate with and build camaraderie with diverse peers through authentic projects, pursue passion projects of their choice, and present their learning to authentic audiences as experiences that supported their engagement and academic success.
