Last week ESA, the consortium and Early Adopters of the project gathered at the Zambian-German Agricultural Knowledge and Training Centre (AKTC) in Chisamba, Zambia, to discuss the outcomes and potential impact of our research, focusing on the potential of upcoming #hyperspectral and #thermal missions for assessing the impact of #drought on agriculture 🌽 . A dedicated workshop with local stakeholders, including smallholder farmers, commercial farmers, research institutes and government officials, led to interesting discussions on how Earth Observation 🛰 can contribute to monitor #food security in general, boost #water productivity 💦 through targeted #irrigation advise and ultimately improve farmers' livelihoods 👨🌾. Our visit to Mubuyu farm 🌾 near Lusaka nicely demonstrated how successful commercial farms can act as local catalysts for rural development by providing jobs and dispersing their knowledge to surrounding communities. It certainly has been an enriching and inspiring experience to all of us! #Desertification is a major environmental issue that threatens many parts of the globe. #Algeria is one of the most affected countries, with nearly 40% of its steppic area (a natural buffer between the Sahara and the fertile lands) is classified as vulnerable to desertification. The #EOAFRICA 🌍 #MAPSPADES Research #Project proposes a #remotesensing-based 🛰 analytical workflow to map the #spatiotemporal evolution of desertification from 2002 to 2022 in the steppic region of Algeria, and to understand its driving factors.
