If you were in the market for a lightweight sports car in the 90s and the Elise was a little too commonplace for you then you may well have found yourself in a Renault showroom. This is the awesome little Renault Sport Spider, which, like the Elise S1, went on sale in 1996. But where some 12,000 Elise's were built by Lotus, only 1,800 Spiders ever saw the light of day. This was Renault's attempt at reintroducing itself as a sporty brand, and it was the first ever car to be branded as a Renault Sport. And its sporty intentions were clear: the Spider has an aluminium chassis combined with plastic composite body, no roof, and a 2.0L engine producing 148hp. At 965kg it was still considerably heavier than an Elise S1 which came in at a mere 690kg, but it did have 30hp more. The Elise won the '96 Performance Car of the Year award as well as Car Magazine’s handling test. The Spider? Didn't even make either lists. I don't really care... I would LOVE to have a go in one of these. The McLaren 750S has won Top Gear Magazine’s Performance Car of the Year at the annual Top Gear Awards. The award is presented to the winner of Top Gear Magazine’s annual Speed Week event, which gathers the year’s best performance cars, as rated by the publication, for a week-long test on road and track. The 750S was tested on the Navarra circuit in northern Spain before heading to the picturesque and challenging roads in the Pamplona region, along with other Speed Week finalists. The 750S was crowned Speed Week winner after impressing the Top Gear judges, who were vocal in their praise of the 750S’ abilities on road and track, particularly its huge performance, scintillating driver feedback and connection, engaging character and strong quality. “Very few cars engage your senses like the 750S – not because of any vices, but simply because the forces coming at you are so alien. It is outrageously fast and agile, it communicates so clearly and it's so willing to adjust its line and angle of attack according to driver inputs.
