🌿 More COP 16 Highlights!🌿 On day 5 of COP 16 in Colombia, the BIOTRAILS EU Project highlighted the role of sustainable public procurement and environmental labelling in addressing biodiversity loss. 📅 Date: October 25, 2024 🕒 Time: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM 📍 Venue: ECCI University, Lobby Theater, Cali, Colombia (Green Zone - public) 🏷️Sustainable public procurement is key to tackling biodiversity loss by using government purchasing power to favour nature-friendly goods and services. This shift encourages suppliers to adopt practices that reduce habitat destruction, pollution and resource depletion. Although many ecolabels still lack explicit biodiversity criteria, they may implicitly address impact areas relevant to biodiversity. There's a need to explore these links further, but also to promote the integration of biodiversity criteria into credible ecolabels. Discussions also emphasised that circular economy approaches should be considered in the procurement process, as they can significantly reduce the amount of primary resources extracted or cultivated. 📈 We agreed that there are data gaps to be filled in order to assess the positive impact of sustainable procurement practices, but that this should not stop us from doing so. Qualitative or semi-quantitative information derived from expert consultation can guide us towards more nature-friendly practices. The BIOTRAILS project is working to fill data gaps in the value chains under consideration, but also to promote innovative approaches. 🔖 The discussions showed that there's a strong interest in using sustainable public procurement to tackle biodiversity loss and that it is potentially one of the levers that can be part of a transformative pathway. 💡Interested in discovering other COP16 events where BIOTRAILS has participated? 🌿 COP 16 Highlights: Promoting Biodiversity through Consumer Action 🌿 On day 4 of COP 16 in Colombia, the BIOTRAILS EU Project played a pivotal role in two impactful events focused on biodiversity and sustainable consumption. Event 1: Consumers and Nature: Making Trade Work for Biodiversity and Development 📅 Date: October 24, 2024 🕒 Time: 11:25 AM – 12:05 PM 📍 Venue: UN Hub, Place Quebec (Blue Zone) Hosted by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) , the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework-EU project, and Consumers International, this roundtable explored how consumer choices significantly impact ecosystems. The session highlighted the need for sustainable consumption and innovative trade policies to support global biodiversity goals. Key insights were shared by experts like Camila Cosse Braslavsky, María Carolina Ramírez García, and Ivana Padierna. Event 2: 7 Ways to Drive Change with Nature-Friendly Consumption 📅 Date: October 24, 2024 🕒 Time: 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM 📍 Venue: Multistakeholder Auditorium, Place Quebec (Blue Zone) Led by Jan Christian Polania Giese, this session showcased the various approaches that support halting and reversing biodiversity loss with sustainable consumption patterns. The session showed that consumer protection tools can help leverage the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. It was also highlighted that information and awareness building is a key component but more instruments and conditions need to be considered. First access to and affordability of nature friendly product alternatives is a basic requirement otherwise many consumers would be excluded from playing their part. Second choice editing can support to bridge the intention to action gap among consumers and facilitate sustainable lifestyles for nature. To monitor the effectiveness of the initiated actions consumption-based targets should be developed and set as already practiced in the climate context. Nevertheless, innovative policies are needed the use of already available tools and instruments like reliable Ecolabels or the biodiversity communication toolkit should be scaled up. And last but not least “niche” products as the cultural handicrafts in the BIOTRAILS project play an important role in biodiversity conservation. 💡 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eBdfqJ-y 📢 Read more about BIOTRAILS participation in COP16 Colombia: https://lnkd.in/eE-Ukx6A Together, we can make peace with nature! 🌍✨ #SustainableConsumption #Biodiversity #ForNature #COP16 #BIOTRAILS #PazConLaNaturaleza Camila Cosse Braslavsky Ivana Padierna José Manuel Balta @Alessandro Galli @Garrette Clarke Bianca Brasil adelphi Consumers International Forest Stewardship Council One Planet network - 10YFP

📢 We are thrilled to share the successful completion of BIOTRAILS Indigenous Women consultation workshop, held on October 3rd and 4th in Ji-Paraná, Rondônia, Brazil! ✨ This event brought together talented indigenous artisans from the Roosevelt, Sete de Setembro, and Igarapé Lourdes territories. The workshop provided a unique forum for indigenous producers to discuss the challenges and potential solutions to strengthen the artisanal socio-biodiversity value chain. We were honored to have representatives from the Coopaiter, Tecê, Karo Paygap, and Wanzeej Pakup Pit communities participate. The event highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous culture as a vital biodiversity conservation strategy and emphasised the value of their crafts as expressions of identity, traditional knowledge, and heritage. Key challenges discussed included: 🔹 The impacts of climate change and deforestation, which threaten biodiversity and the availability of materials needed for their crafts. Also noted were the climate change issues that affect their wellbeing and daily lives such as dried-up rivers affecting fish availability as a food source, poor air quality from forest clearing fires, and more frequent and increased experience of heat waves. 🔹 Other issues included difficulties in receiving fair prices for their cultural products, as distributors and consumers often undervalue the time and effort involved in creating them. 🔹 The women also pointed out the challenges in bringing their products to the market and promoting their art, which is crucial for preserving cultural diversity. The workshop was organised by the #BIOTRAILS consortium partners: Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT (Wendy Francesconi, Thaissa Sobreiro), Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Raffaele Giordano, Pompilio Vergine), adelphi (Jan Christian Polania Giese, Johannes Stahl, Maren T. ) in partnership with #Forest Trends and #GREENDATA (Nicia Coutinho, Suellen Mangueira, Tatiana Tareto Tintino).
