The European Union (EU) is represented in the United States by its Delegation in Washington, D.C., which works in close coordination with the Embassies of the 27 EU Member States. The current Ambassador is Jovita Neliupšienė. Our Delegation in Washington, D.C., represents and promotes the interests and values of the European Union in the United States. This includes presenting and explaining EU policies and actions to the different branches and levels of the U.S. Administration, Congress, and across the country, as well as promoting EU-U.S. cooperation in all fields. We engage inside and outside of Washington with the American public, political actors, the media, academia, business, think tanks, and civil society to raise awareness on the importance of the transatlantic relationship and its unparalleled contribution to the prosperity and security of Europeans and Americans alike. The EU also maintains an office in New York, serving as the Delegation to the United Nations, and in San Francisco, mainly handling digital policy. 🏙️🚲 The EU-funded IURC North America program has released a new Sustainable Urban Mobility and Transport Best Practice: "Promoting Bike Ridership: The Success of bergamoinbicicletta.it" Urban mobility and environmental sustainability go hand in hand, and Bergamo, Italy, is leading by example with its comprehensive bike initiative, bergamoinbicicletta.it. With transport accounting for around 25% of CO2 emissions in the EU, encouraging alternative mobility solutions is critical. Comune di Bergamo, a city in northern Italy, is an example of a successful and comprehensive effort to transform bike ridership. With a clear focus on sustainability and community engagement, the bergamoinbicicletta.it project is setting the stage for a healthier, cleaner, and more bike-friendly future. 📣🇪🇺 Last weekend, we presented the European Union's educational outreach initiatives in the United States at the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Annual Conference. We were thrilled that more than 500 teachers and education professionals visited our booth! We saw significant interest in the Euro Challenge, a national competition funded by the EU that engages students in exploring European economic and monetary policy. Program Manager Khyla Duarte, from implementing partner Working in Support of Education (W!se), hosted an introductory workshop that provided practical information about entering the competition. ⚡ City-to-city diplomacy is taking the world by storm! From November 4-5, the EU-funded IURC III North America program brought together 14 cities across the EU, USA, and Canada to focus on Innovative Urban Planning. Held alongside the 2024 Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona, the event facilitated collaboration on shared urban challenges through meetings, presentations, and site visits to innovative affordable housing projects around the city. Highlights include: - Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB): Shared social housing projects that are flexible and sustainable in the long term. - Anci Lazio Rome: Presented progress on new social housing rules involving local stakeholders. - City of Calgary: Introduced their “Home is Here” plan to increase affordable housing. - New York City: Highlighted the PACT program, aimed at rehabilitating thousands of housing units. - City of Toronto: Discussed modular housing initiatives and new rules to make housing development more efficient. - Hamburger Senat: Showcased how they use urban data and AI for better governance in an ethical way. - City of Nanaimo: Focused on enhancing the building permit process to expedite construction. - Dublin City Council: Shared insights on long-term data collection to help with better community planning. - Innovative Sofia, Sofia Municipality: Stressed the need for better data integration.
