“It’s not so much about how politicians can listen to researchers; it’s more about how we can work together to build spaces for discussion and create public policies together, finding a common language of understanding,” Leire Pajín Iraola, Member of the European Parliament. On 5 December, researchers and policymakers gathered at a workshop hosted by the European Climate-Health Cluster to address the challenge of transforming complex research into actionable policy decisions. The event focused on #ScienceforPolicy #S4P, revealing essential strategies for bridging the gap between scientific evidence and decision-making processes. With a focus on health and climate change, the workshop aimed to empower and support researchers from the six cluster projects—@BlueAdaptEU, CATALYSE Project EU, CLIMOS Project, HIGH Horizons, IDAlert, and TRIGGER EU Project—to contribute meaningfully to evidence-informed policy development. Thank you again to the wonderful speakers who shared valuable perspectives, practical advice, and strategies to enhance the translation of science into policy: Alba Godfrey, Kim van Daalen, PhD, Leire Pajín Iraola, @Peter Löffler, Aleksandra Kazmierczak. Today, the European Climate-Health Cluster is hosting the first session of its second thematic workshop, dedicated to Training on #ScienceforPolicy, organised by Working Group 1: Science Translation to Policy. Science for Policy (S4P) refers to the process of transferring scientific information to policymakers to create evidence-informed policies. This is a key focus of the 6 projects @BlueAdaptEU, CATALYSE Project, CLIMOS Project, HIGH Horizons, IDAlert, and TRIGGER EU Project that form the Cluster. In this session, five speakers—including three external to the Cluster—will deliver their insights into Science for Policy: 👉 Alba Godrey, from the @BlueAdaptEU project and Senior Project Coordinator at EuroHealthNet, will provide a brief overview and practical advice on how researchers can effectively engage with policymakers and processes, using their research to inform policymaking. 👉 Kim van Daalen, PhD, from the IDAlert project and Postdoctoral researcher at Barcelona Supercomputing Center, will share examples of best practices in Science for Policy, drawing on insights from the The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change. 👉 Leire Pajín Iraola will share her perspective as a Member of the European Parliament. 👉 Peter Löffler, Policy Officer at DG CLIMA, will discuss the current state and direction of EU policymaking and action in this field, helping participants identify ways to contribute effectively. 👉Aleksandra Kazmierczak, Expert in climate change and human health at the European Environment Agency, will introduce the European Climate and Health Observatory initiative and outline opportunities for the research community to contribute to its strategic objectives. The session will be moderated by @Debra Jackson from the HIGH Horizons project and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London Medicine. We look forward to an insightful and inspiring session, equipping researchers with the tools to contribute to more robust, evidence-based policies that advance better health outcomes across Europe. #EUclimateandHealth

The research and indicator development work carried out in IDAlert directly feed into to the The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change in Europe reports. If you too would like to contribute to the development of new Lancet Countdown Europe indicators to monitor the connections between #Health and #ClimateChange in Europe, join their webinar 👇 Webinar details: 📅 Monday, 9th December, 11:00 CET 🔗 Zoom Webinar Registration: https://lnkd.in/eArWiHBq #EUClimateandHealth
📣 Contribute to the development of new Lancet Countdown Europe indicators! Read on for details of our upcoming webinar to find out more... ➡️ What is a Lancet Countdown indicator? The Lancet Countdown in Europe is a research collaboration led by Cathryn Tonne and Joacim Rocklöv. Using indicators to track an aspect of the relationship between health and climate change, the reports produced by the Lancet Countdown provide scientifically sound, relevant, representative, and reliable overviews of the links between health and climate change. We have identified the following priority areas for indicator development for the 2026 Europe report: ⭕ Adaptation, planning, and resilience for health ⭕ Mitigation (i.e. Healthy, low-carbon travel, active travel) ⭕ Economics and finance ⭕ Indicators for European cities ➡️ How to get involved The Lancet Countdown in Europe is hosting an open webinar for recognized researchers in their field, to introduce the scope of the report, indicator criteria and the submission and development process of new indicators. If you have expertise in any of the priority fields identified, we would like to invite you to attend our webinar and to consider the possibility of developing an indicator for the next report. #NbS are powerful tools to address biodiversity loss and #climatechange. But their untintended impact on human health can be overlooked. For example: 🌱 Wetland restoration enhances biodiversity but may increase mosquito habitats. 🌿 Green corridors cool cities but could raise exposure to ticks. The good news? These risks are manageable with: ✅ Smart design that considers health impacts. ✅ Collaboration with ecologists and public health experts. ✅ Community education to prevent risks. Want to know more? Join our special #webinar tomorrow 5 December (15:00-16:30), where we’ll explore the critical intersection of NbS, climate change, and public health. 🔗 Register now: https://lnkd.in/ebmBfZ5e

The COP29 Special Report on Climate Change and Health – "Health is the argument for climate action" was launched earlier this week at a special event with the Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez, WHO DG Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, UNICEF's Deputy Executive Director Kitty van der Heijden, Director of the WHO department of Public Health and Environment Dr Maria Neira, and other partners. The report was collated with input from across the global health community working with WHO, and we are so grateful for Carla Maia, Daniela Nunes, and Suzana Blesic who contributed to the consultation process. 🌍 Have you read the latest #CatalyseHorizon publication looking at the combined health burden of air pollution and non-optimal temperature? 🔬 In this study, researchers used advanced numerical simulations to project future mortality rates attributable to long-term exposure to both non-optimal temperatures and air pollution. 🔍 Key insights: 👉 By the end of the century, mortality could increase fourfold, with an estimated 30 million people per year at risk. 👉 Temperature-related mortality is set to rise sevenfold, emerging as a more critical health risk than air pollution for over 20% of the global population. 👉 Pollution-related mortality could increase fivefold, highlighting the dual threat posed by our warming world.
