The European Edtech Alliance has joined UNESCO’s Global Education Coalition! We are incredibly proud to be able to contribute to the Coalition’s important work in supporting countries to advance equity-first, research-backed approaches to digital transformation in education. The Global Education Coalition (GEC) is currently engaged in 233 projects across 112 countries impacting 400 million learners and 12 million teachers to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 4 – Quality Education. European Edtech Alliance is also leading a workstream as part of the Digital Transformation Collaborative - a tech-focused subgroup of the membership that aims to mobilize resources at the national level in collaboration with governments to leverage sustainable digital transformation in education. In addition, the EEA facilitated a workshop during the Global Education Coalition meeting last March (images below), which kicked off a productive sequence of discussions on the importance of an alliance of alliances. Through the EdTech Strategy Lab, we’re not just hosting events; we’re redefining how collaboration happens in #EdTech. The EdTech Strategy Lab is at the forefront of this critical dialogue, experimenting with innovative formats of knowledge exchange that bring together a diverse array of stakeholders from across the EdTech ecosystem. We believe these formats foster collaboration and build a shared understanding of the diverse needs and motivations within this ecosystem, ultimately empowering evidence-informed decision-making for the future. Find out more about the different formats we’ve used this year, including at last week’s EdTech Strategy Lab: Empowering the Ecosystem event in Paris: https://lnkd.in/eMPhctSz

🌍 Building Bridges to Transform Learning at UNESCO 🌍 On December 2–3, 2024, the Annual Meeting of the Global Alliance on the Science of Learning for Education took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. This dynamic gathering brought together educators, policymakers, and researchers to explore pathways for integrating the science of learning into global education practices. In his opening address, Borhene Chakroun, emphasized the urgency of addressing the global learning crisis, advocating for a shift from linear education models to diverse, contextually relevant pathways. His words set the tone for the discussions that followed, focused on evidence-based policymaking aligned with SDG4 and the urgency of bridging the gap between science and policy and practice. Translating science into policy is complex – while became very clear during working groups’ updates and later consultation workshops. The lack of consensus among the scientists also adds pressures on the “translation” process and, as Svein Osttveit (UNESCO’s IBE) noted, this leads to "distorted interpretations". The panel discussions offered insights into various stakeholders’ views and experiences. Beth Havinga, in a panel led by Donika Dimovska from Jacobs Foundation, discussed the needs of the sector from the perspective of policymakers, educators and development partners. During this panel discussions some recurring themes and challenges that were identified: - Implementation challenges – evidence is far too often too prescriptive and prescriptive approaches often fail without teacher buy-in and adequate training. - Petri Partanen stressed the need for scientific literacy—an understanding of evidence and its limitations—and highlighted the importance of addressing potential pitfalls during implementation. - Teachers’ perspectives matter and are often overlooked - there was a strong call for better integration of teachers’ voices, which Dr Lisa-Maria Müller (Chartered College of Teachers) passionately advocated for in the panel on knowledge brokering led by Kelly Shiohira. - In the EdTech working group, discussions highlighted the need for broader evidence types and a deeper understanding of technology's impact beyond student learning outcomes. This inspiring meeting underscored a key takeaway: collaboration is essential. Bridging the gaps between researchers, policymakers, and educators requires a shared commitment to learning that’s inclusive, evidence-based, and adaptable. Thank you so much to the organisers! 📘 Let’s continue building these bridges and transforming education together! #EuropeanEdTechAlliance #UNESCO #LearningNeverStops
