Many new challenges are nuanced and unique to EVs. A specific example of this is figuring out the fault analysis required to isolate the charger deficiencies from the onboard charging systems, from the power and command management systems in the EV, the two-level power distribution and storage devices ( i.e.: the 12V legacy system and the high voltage traction battery system) and problems added by operator use/misuse. The advent of the EV age is also bringing traditional fleet operations new opportunities for value creation; improved driver performance, optimized vehicle and fleet TCO efficiency, extended operational hours, enhanced vehicle health and security features, a longer useful vehicle asset life, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable energy credit monetization… the list goes on. There’s a lot that can go wrong, but also a lot of upside if things go right! To win you need a partner who: 1) understands how to transition to an EV fleet, 2) understands and can explain the financial drivers and benefits of the EV fleet through actual TCO metrics and unique fleet performance data, and 3) can help unlock operational performance improvement, validation, quality and safety. While the recent SEC rulings wrt GhG reporting don't require Scope 3, California and other states and regions do. Companies that want to get ahead on reducing this part of their emissions profile, generally the largest contributor, have a great opportunity to lean in now and start electrifying the last mile. For public companies, increases in E scores can result in decreases in Beta and cost of debt. There are many more reasons that just being a good corporate citizen. Logistics operations using class 1-3 vehicles can realize TCO savings (~$90k) on a 12 year operating basis which make EVs significantly cheaper than ICE, and can reduce GhG CO2 by over 90% at no additional cost.
