The Reality of Drowning:
As many of you know, Casey McGovern’s (the Executive Director of ECAS) mission is deeply personal.
Every year, 4,000 lives are tragically lost to drowning, a 100% preventable tragedy. And for every life lost, there are more than 30,000 non-fatal drownings that leave lasting scars.
These images reflect the harsh truth: the aftermath of drowning doesn’t just leave an empty seat at the table. It leaves a void that never truly heals. The trauma ripples out, impacting not only the family, but also friends, neighbors, and anyone who fought to save or help that child.
Edna Mae, Casey’s daughter, was not buried in a traditional grave. Instead, Casey and her husband, Shannon, planted a memorial tree in a park where Edna Mae spent many joyful days playing with her playgroup. This tree stands as a symbol of her life—a life taken too soon—but also as a testament to why we do the work we do.
This is why the Every Child a Swimmer program is so vital. We provide access to quality swim lessons, ensuring that every child has the skills to be safe in the water and can exit the water unassisted. We advocate for stronger water safety legislation to protect every child from preventable tragedies.
Together, we can change these horrific statistics and create a generation of swimmers.
