The rising costs of dying is a hot topic at the moment when we have a cost of living crisis, even before the end arrives. To add to the conversation around funeral affordability, the landscape trajectory is moving to more direct cremations followed by private D-I-Y memorial type celebration of life services. Having worked at the coal face as a Funeral Director, the brevity of the trajectory had gained momentum. And will continue to grow. Focusing on direct cremation affordability options, in Christchurch, there are 19 Funeral Director service providers offering direct cremations. The cheapest can be $2,200, the dearest is $6,650. A fantastic situation for families to have options. And although the media narrative has pointed part of the rising costs to local council increases, be mindful that all Funeral Directors pass onto families a professional services fee. And this is before they add on other elements such as transfers of the deceased, mortuary care, casket, service sheets, celebrant engagement, venue, live streaming, catering and the like. Unfortunately, when the event arrives, we may not know what options are available. Especially when we are vulnerable navigating a journey surrounding the loss of a loved one. And just to add, the cost of a full service followed by a burial (or cremation) can be approx. $9K to $18K, depending on what elements you incorporate in a funeral/memorial service. Eulogies are the heart of any funeral or memorial service, the essence of the deceased person. It's natural to freak out when asked. Our minds swirl with perhaps where to start, what to say, how will I go speaking, how will I be received. Stress is all part and parcel of it. However, please know this - to be asked to deliver one, is special. The feeling after - way more than you can ever imagine. There are a heap of on-line tools to help you if ever the opportunity presents itself. Alternatively, head to the Everything Funeral website and you will find the '7 Steps on How to Write a Eulogy' under the resources tab. Today I had an opportunity to present the 7 Steps to a networking group. It was humbling to receive positive feedback at making something feared enlightened, to be slightly more confidently possible for the audience.
