I repost this thanks to Jes Buster Madsen who has helped make great strides in improving the development of youth football players. My intent is never to keep secrets about what I believe develops top youth players and after deep study from several sources coming from nations that develop top youth players, cognitive ability is the most important quality. Certainly as important as any other quality in building and bringing out the best in youth players to become top elite footballers. Which is why I share the article that he has completed here after a number of years of hard and dilligent work.
The article is finally published (Open Access). Its been 3 years in the making. I'm very proud of the article, and hopefully it can spark a common language and direction for research into cognition in elite football players. In the coming weeks I will post about each section of the article, and explain some things in greater detail.

In this episode of the EvoToca podcast, coach Killian reflects on how playing soccer with older children during youth in France helps build toughness and resilience. This contrasts with the current generation of young players in the United States, who may be more sheltered and less exposed to physical play. We discuss the importance of allowing children to experience the physicality of the game without excessive intervention, emphasizing that overcoming challenges is crucial for character development. Our conversation shifts to coaching methodologies, particularly the differences between European and American approaches to youth soccer. European academies are highly competitive and treat young players with a level of seriousness akin to professional environments. In Europe, consistent practice, discipline, and repetition of basic skills are emphasized from a young age. Legends like Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo are cited as examples of players who achieved greatness through relentless practice and mastery of fundamentals. There is concern that many young American players lack this dedication, partly because they do not watch soccer regularly and are distracted by other interests. Emphasizing the importance of watching professional games, we argue that it helps players understand the sport better and develop a deeper passion for it. Individual skills such as dribbling and ball control in younger players before introducing passing and team tactics as they mature is more suitable for younger kids. Developing technical proficiency and confidence on the ball should be the primary focus in the early stages of youth development. Changes to improve soccer culture in the United States such as implementing a promotion and relegation system similar to that in European leagues could increase competitiveness and incentivize teams to perform better. We believe such structural changes, along with a shift in coaching philosophies and parental attitudes, could significantly enhance the development of soccer in America. #soccercoach #soccertraining #youthsoccer #soccerislife #ussoccer #footballcoaching #footballcoach

In Episode 13 of the EvoToca podcast, Christian Silva, the founder of Silva Academy, shares his profound insights into youth soccer coaching, emphasizing a deeply intentional approach. Silva discusses the importance of purposeful training, where every drill and session is meticulously planned to foster technically proficient and adaptable players. He argues that soccer education should go beyond random technical work; it should prepare players for real-game scenarios. His philosophy revolves around equipping players with the ability to recognize and solve situations on the field, promoting a complete understanding of the game. Silva also highlights the importance of creativity, not as unrestricted freedom but as the ability to solve problems on the pitch. He stresses that creativity stems from a player's awareness of their surroundings and understanding how to leverage space effectively. This approach is critical to his coaching, as he aims to develop players who are not only technically sound but also mentally resilient. Silva's coaching is rooted in his own experiences, blending a love for technique with a strategic understanding of soccer, drawing on his background in psychology to help players maintain a balance between self-improvement and self-acceptance. This dual focus ensures that while players are pushed to refine their skills during training, they are also taught to embrace their strengths and maintain confidence during matches. Silva's insights offer a fresh perspective on youth soccer coaching, focusing on holistic player development and challenging conventional methods in the U.S. soccer landscape. #soccercoach #soccertraining #youthsoccer #soccerislife #ussoccer #footballcoaching #footballcoach

Maheed, a 2015 born, 9 year old soccer player is by some distance the best player at the AYSES soccer club located in Fairview, Texas. The club currently has teams from 2018 born players to 2007 born players. But Maheed is one of quite a few players who possessed from the outset an amazing talent, understanding of the game, and high level ball skills before joining the club. And it appears to resemble a pattern of players who joined the American youth soccer program late. It is not uncommon to find that many of the best players do not join organized clubs until later than usual and so was the case with Clint Dempsey, who spent much of his time as a young kid playing for fun among many Mexican immigrant kids in Nacogdoches, Texas. And growing up he spent many years playing alongside much older players. Maheed like Dempsey learned soccer from someone much older, his brother in particular, who is 5-6 years older. And played with him consistently. He did not spend 30 minutes of a 1.5 hour practice session at 6 years old learning passing technique followed by another 30 minutes of how to stand and place in formation during a game. Followed by a conclusion of a 30 minute scrimmage resulting in a total of 2-4 minutes of ball touches among a game of 4 versus 4. It would not be crazy to believe that coaches, including myself, are the ones that mess up kids in the early stages wasting time teaching formations, passing, and tactics in the early ages at the expense of exploration, creativity, and ball touches therefore ruining our players. And yet he still passes better than his peers. Instead, perhaps we need to be less invasive in our approach particularly in the younger ages. It is a pleasure to watch Maheed play. It is important that if we are going to consistently find players like Maheed and develop the most elite players in the world here in the USA, that we share practices and methods because not one coach or club has all the answers and it would be absurd to think so. Because no one coach or club has ever produced that result in the USA. At EvoToca, we aim to be a community in search of coaches truly motivated to improve the level of its youth players without being conflicted by the business side of youth soccer interested in their Profit and Loss statements more interested in growth then in quality. #soccercoach #soccertraining #youthsoccer #soccerislife #ussoccer #footballcoaching #footballcoach

Mason, a forward from North Texas, currently playing for the AYSES and an admirer of Real Madrid. Mason's journey began at age two in indoor leagues, and by eight or nine, he was playing club soccer with older teams, recognizing his potential early on. His passion for the game drove him to seek higher competition, leading to training stints in Germany. Mason recounts the rigorous preparation, including additional training sessions and workouts, to match the elevated competition in Europe. He emphasizes the stark differences in playstyle, noting the rapid pace and lack of time on the ball in Germany compared to the U.S. Mason candidly discusses the mental hurdles, such as overcoming language barriers and adapting to a new team's dynamics. His advice to aspiring young players is clear: never take opportunities for granted and always strive to outwork the competition. This episode offers valuable insights into the dedication and resilience required to succeed in international soccer. #soccercoach #soccertraining #youthsoccer #soccerislife #ussoccer #footballcoaching #footballcoach

Coach Danny delves into the nuances of ball control, comparing the deft touch of legendary players like Zidane and Marcelo with other skilled players to illustrate varying degrees of mastery. He stresses that the speed at which a player controls the ball is crucial, as it directly impacts their ability to make strategic decisions on the field. This quick control provides the essential time needed to assess the situation, decide whether to run with the ball, or make a pass. Coach Danny's philosophy centers on tailored training exercises to improve each player's individual skills, particularly focusing on dribbling and control. By enhancing these fundamental abilities, he aims to empower players to elevate their game, reflecting the mission of EvoToca to foster continuous improvement and excellence in youth soccer development. #soccercoach #soccertraining #youthsoccer #soccerislife #ussoccer #footballcoaching #footballcoach
