Thousands of fuel-poor households are losing out as millions of pounds allocated by the Scottish Government for energy efficiency upgrades are going unspent. Figures published this week by the Scottish Government reveal that nearly £61.8 million of a total £192 million set aside for Area Based Schemes energy efficiency projects has not been spent over the last three years, with £10 million of that unused in 2023/24 alone. We're calling on the Scottish Government to work with councils and delivery partners to make sure this funding is fully spent in future. Specifically we're asking the Scottish Government to: ❄️ Advise councils of their grant allocation earlier in the year so they have more time to procure and deliver the programmes. ❄️ Reallocate any underspend early so fuel poor households receive the help they need. ❄️ Work with councils to develop improvement plans where they are consistently underspending. ➡️ 85% of participants would recommend a heat pump for its reliability, ease of use, and low noise. ➡️ Heat pumps showed efficiency three times greater than modern gas boilers, even in temperatures as low as -6°C. ➡️ Challenges such as space, noise, and slow grid connection are solvable with targeted innovation.
The wait is over! The Electrification of Heat Demonstration Project final summary reports and datasets are now available! These reports and datasets reveal how heat pumps are a viable low-carbon heating solution for all housing types, examine the barriers to installation, and detail the performance of the heat pumps. Drawing on data from 742 heat pumps installed across a wide variety of homes in England and Scotland, the findings showcase their performance in terms of property types, energy efficiency ratings, and heating needs. Funded by Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Energy Systems Catapult, the project highlights the transformative potential of large-scale heat pump adoption for home heating across the UK. Key findings include: ➡️ 85% of participants would recommend a heat pump for its reliability, ease of use, and low noise. ➡️ Heat pumps showed efficiency three times greater than modern gas boilers, even in temperatures as low as -6°C. ➡️ Challenges such as space, noise, and slow grid connection are solvable with targeted innovation. These findings demonstrate that heat pumps are a viable option for UK homes, and the challenges associated with their large-scale rollout are not insurmountable. Want to learn more?
