  • What investments do you probably want to avoid as US citizen living abroad? 🇺🇸 PFICs are grouped funds – the equivalent of an ETF or index fund – and they can be very problematic tax-wise for US expats. If you work with a financial advisor, they would be able to recommend more appropriate options. • The Guardian recently published an article of helpful tips and advice for people who still need to complete their Self Assessment Tax Return. While the article provides some brilliant tips and guidance, a couple of very important non-resident elements are missing. Firstly, it's vital to confirm your tax residency and domicile status using the SA109 Form – but the form itself cannot be completed using the normal online self assessment process. To submit it, you would need to use specific software which is not generally available to the public. Secondly, you'll need to correctly interpret the Statutory Residence Test to determine your tax residence status, and understand how schemes like the Split Year Treatment may apply to you. While this may seem straightforward, incorrectly interpreting any of these elements can significantly affect how much tax you have to pay in the UK. If you're in any doubt about your tax return, it is vital to get advice from a trusted tax specialist – request a free introduction to one of our experts: https://lnkd.in/ePBqu2Pm #UKtax #UKtaxreturns #SelfAssessement #Expats #UKexpats

  • The Italian property market is completely different to the US – particularly the selling culture. 🇮🇹 Many Italians have a very close relationship to their property. Letting go of their home isn't always easy and may feel very personal – especially if the property has been in their family their whole life. Often, sellers be present for property viewings, even if an agent is involved. We'd always recommend seeking expert advice before you start negotiating on Italian property, as the responses you will get – and the methods of negotiating – are very different in Italy compared to the US. 🏠 Need help with relocating to or buying property in Italy? However, you can only qualify for citizenship through your mother's side if you were born after January 1, 1948, because before that date women were not able to pass on dual citizenship to their children. • Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (FEIE) will exclude a certain amount of your foreign-earned income from US taxes. This option may work best when you're living and working in a country with low or no foreign taxes. However, you cannot exclude some types of income, such as passive income. Foreign Tax Credits (FTC) allows you to claim a dollar-for-dollar credit for foreign taxes paid, which will reduce your US tax liability. This can be beneficial if you're in a country with high taxes and you want to carry them over for future years. It is important to note, there are credits that may only be available to you if you do not use the FEIE, such as the Child Tax Credit. Often, taxpayers with dependents will choose the FTC as opposed to the FEIE for this reason. Your choice as to whether to use the FEIE or FTC is also going to depend on what other types of income you have besides wage income and where you're paying those taxes. You cannot use both the FTC and the FEIE on the same income, but you can use them both on your tax return. For example, you might use the FEIE on your wages and the FTC on your passive income.
