We all know the vicious cycle of needing work experience to get work experience. But how do we break it? That's where externships come in. In a recent interview with Forbes, our CEO and co-founder, Matt Wilkerson, explained how externships offer a solution for gaining real-world experience. "An externship is a more scalable, work-experience model that offers project-based work in collaboration with companies, nonprofits, or government agencies. Compared to internships, externships for students are: Shorter in Duration: Allowing students to complete several externships and explore multiple careers. More Flexible: Programs are available anytime during the year from anywhere in the world, with the ability for students to work on their own schedule. They are remote and online. External to a Company’s HR Process: No W-2, 1099 tax form, or company onboarding. Less Pressure: Students are not explicitly penalized if they drop out, cannot finish, or fall behind due to life circumstances. 'The result is the ability for students to quickly discover and test career possibilities, as well as build experience and confidence to attract future career opportunities,' says Wilkerson." Traditional internships aren't enough to bridge the gap for recent graduates. Here's why: Internships have long been the go-to for gaining hands-on experience, but they come with significant challenges. High administrative burdens, geographical constraints, and limited availability often leave many students without opportunities. "The market for work experience is fundamentally broken. Internships are great when you can get them, but most college students who want an internship can’t get one. The main reason is a supply issue. Companies don’t offer enough of them. The other underlying reason is that they are too time-consuming for both employers and students. We need a better way for students to explore careers throughout their time in college," says Matt Wilkerson, Extern's CEO and founder, in his Forbes interview. We’ve all seen it—whether firsthand, through friends, or relatives: recent graduates are struggling to find jobs despite their degrees. Picture this: you spend $200K+ on tuition, graduate into a job market where entry-level positions require 3-5 years of experience, and find yourself stuck in unemployment. This is the reality for many recent graduates. So, Forbes recently met with our CEO and co-founder, Matt Wilkerson, to discuss this issue. "Nearly 60% of parents are financially supporting their adult kids aged 18 to 34, and 57% of young adults are living with their parents. The economic challenges are clear. The white-collar job market is extremely competitive, as more Americans attain college degrees. Employers are requiring unrealistic professional experience for entry-level positions, making it difficult for recent graduates to compete."
