Helping to #endhunger and #foodwaste in the North Bay, CA.

About us

By rescuing excess fresh food from businesses, securing freshly-made meals, and immediately delivering the food to nonprofits serving the North Bay's most vulnerable children, seniors, and families, we address the critical issues of hunger, wasted food & climate change. ExtraFood's county-wide food recovery program picks up excess fresh food from any North Bay organization – such as restaurants, grocery stores and caterers – and immediately delivers it to nonprofits -- such as homeless shelters, food pantries, and after-school programs -- serving people facing food insecurity. Additional programs include our Community Meals program which works with restaurants and caterers to make meals and Share the Bounty, which rescues fruit and vegetables from backyards, community gardens, and farms. Our mission is to help end hunger and wasted food in the North Bay. Join us! To donate food, make a gift, volunteer, or receive food, please visit our website at ExtraFood.org.

  • Happy World Environment Day! Reduce Reuse and Recycle have always been important ways to help our planet. We'd like to introduce Recover as a 4th tactic. At ExtraFood, we recover surplus food and redistribute it to people in need, so we're not only fighting hunger but also reducing food waste and its impact on our environment. Did you know that reducing food waste is one of the most effective ways to combat climate change? Every meal we save prevents food from ending up in landfills, where it would generate harmful greenhouse gases. Join us in celebrating #WorldEnvironmentDay by making a difference: 🌍 Donate to support our food recovery efforts. 🌍 Volunteer to help us rescue and deliver food. 🌍 Spread the word about the importance of reducing food waste. Together, we can nourish our community and protect our planet. 💚

  • We are excited to share that we have a newly wrapped refrigerated van for San Francisco food rescues! Now that Food Runners is an ExtraFood program, we are rescuing more food than ever before. On the first day out in the purple van, Driver Jose delivered fresh excess food from Safeway La Playa to One Richmond so they can distribute it to people in need.

  • One way we encourage people who are struggling is to learn about CalFresh, the statewide food program that helps Californians buy more groceries when money is tight. There are nearly 2 million people that are eligible but not receiving benefits to help them get food assistance. If you know someone that is eligible, have them apply at CalFreshFood.org At ExtraFood we are all about increasing equitable access to healthy fresh food. You can learn more about our Bonus Bucks program, in partnership with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, we printed and distributed vouchers to various housing facilities where seniors can redeem them for fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey at participating North Bay farmers markets. Just one more way we can help provide fresh food for people who are struggling. #Calfreshawarenessmonth

  • We're thrilled to welcome Grocery Outlet in Marin City as a new food donor! Teaming up with them to donate their surplus fresh food means more access to nutritious food options, promoting healthier lives. As a food recovery organization, we know quality groceries make a huge difference for people who are struggling. With Grocery Outlet's support, we'll expand our reach, rescue more surplus food, and prevent food from going to waste. ExtraFood will keep the food we collect from Grocery Outlet in Marin City local, ensuring it benefits the community where it's needed most.
