⌚️Submariner Vibe on a Budget One of the most iconic and instantly recognizable watches ever produced, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner (to give it its full swanky name) was first introduced in 1954 and never seems to have gone away. It was the first watch to be waterproof up to 100m and specifically designed for pro-divers, although within a decade or so it had become a luxury fashion item with the addition of “non-essential” complications like a date window on some models. Although it’s evolved over the years, the classic Submariner style includes luminescent hour markers with a distinctive combination of dots, batons, and an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock, Mercedes hands, a unidirectional rotatable bezel with a ceramic insert, prominent crown guards on the side of the case, and a solid-link Oyster bracelet. Modern versions have also upped the water resistance to 300m. On the Wants list of most serious watch geeks, the only downside of the Submariner is the price! A brand-new model can cost anywhere between $9,000 and $40,000, so for many of us it’s simply the stuff that dreams are made of. But, unsurprisingly, there have been an enormous number of homages released over the years which mean that you can enjoy the timeless style of the Submariner without taking out a second mortgage. We’ve compiled a list of some of the best Submariner-type watches from modern Microbrands, some of which stick very closely to the formula, while others give it some interesting twists. The main thing, though, is that they’re all priced at less than $1,000 (well, almost all!). So what are we waiting for? We’ve already had a look at some of the great indy and microbrands which have sprung up in the USA over the past decade or so, and now we’re heading across the Atlantic to focus on the UK. It’s a smaller market, sure, but there are still plenty of companies to choose from, and they’re every bit as innovative and imaginative as their American cousins!
