The Uncertain Future of Media Agencies Brilliant Nick Manning article below in The Media Leader UK. Nick tells a pretty complete story about the history of media agencies and the absolute mess clients AND their agencies find themselves in today. The story is a MUST READ. A few thoughts to top it off from the folks at Mercer Island Group: 1. Nick soundly points out that independent media agencies are innovating and challenging, at least locally, the Holdcos. This is spot on in the US: - folks like PMG and Tinuiti have innovated at scale - many of the smart performance media shops are adding stronger full-journey capabilities to meet the need to address the entire customer journey (shops like New Engen, Inc., Ovative Group, DAC and Wpromote) - Acadia is banging the drum on transparency while extending capabilities - smaller shops like NOVUS Media LLC, Marketing Doctor Inc., Exverus Media, Vision Communications Media LLC and Mosaic Media Agency have many of the smartest kids in class and overperform for their clients 2. Media agencies shouldn't be platforms (thanks, Nick!). They should be the client's "agent", representing the best interests of their clients with distinction. And this is where things will continue to get trickier... - non-transparent media practices already abound at many of the largest media agencies - but fasten your seatbelts, as we believe the growth of retail media will add another fast-moving era in non-transparent behavior To combat this lack of transparency, large clients need more "choice" at scale. The full customer journey work at places like BarkleyOKRP's media group, New Engen, Inc. and others is critical to a healthy industry. 3. Horizon Media is in an interesting place, as the world's largest indie media agency with amazing capabilities AND a principal buying operation. This fine agency has an opportunity to better separate from the path the holdcos have been charting. 4. The state of "strategy" in agencies today is terribly uneven. This can be the run to daylight in opposition to non-transparent practices. New technologies like Waldo help uplevel anyone's skill quicker. Add great training to tools like Waldo and you are on your way. 5. Clients need to get their own house in order: - Fix your workflows, including proper briefing practices. Enormous waste occurs (& agency costs increase) as many clients fail at basics. - Monitor your performance as clients. Client-agency 360's are essential. Have your agencies grade your client performance - and address weaknesses. - Update media agency MSAs. They are undoubtedly outdated. 6. The broken digital media supply chain has been joined by broken traditional media supply chain transparency. Who will fix this? This is especially concerning to the mid-market where most clients & agencies exist. The Association of National Advertisers (Bill Duggan) has a fine report highlighting principal buying risks. The industry needs help beyond the warnings. Thanks again, Nick.
