Everyone deserves a place to call home. Fighting for racial, economic, and housing justice in NJ and beyond.
About us
Fair Share Housing Center (FSHC), founded in 1975, is the only public interest organization entirely devoted to defending the housing rights of New Jersey’s poor through enforcement of the Mount Laurel Doctrine, the landmark decision that prohibits economic discrimination through exclusionary zoning and requires all towns to provide their “fair share” of their region’s need for affordable housing. The mission of FSHC is to end discriminatory or exclusionary housing patterns which have deprived the poor, particularly those presently living in inner cities, of the opportunity to reside in an environment which offers safe, decent, and sanitary housing near employment and educational opportunities. FSHC is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

“I believe these politicians are badly underestimating their constituents. I'm convinced the majority of families in these towns do not harbor ugly fears of people who might be of a different color and income level. These families realize that if their communities meet their fair share obligations through a well-planned community-based effort, the character of their communities will not be changed. They know, as I do from long professional experience, that families moving into affordable housing are typically hardworking people caught in a squeeze by the astronomical cost of housing in New Jersey.”
In this new op-ed, Barbara Dunn spells out why NJ's local leaders should embrace our affordable housing law: "This is not just a moral crisis. It's a practical crisis as well. How can our state survive if the workers we depend on can't afford to live here?"

Thanksgiving is a time when family and friends can gather at home to celebrate, share a meal, and reconnect. Affordable housing ensures that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, has a place to host these gatherings and create memories. #thanksgiving
