Black children are not only disproportionately represented in the child welfare system, they also spend longer in foster care than other children. It’s systemic discrimination within the child welfare system that denies these young people their right to a permanent, loving family. As National Adoption Month comes to a close, Families Rising continues to urge public and private child welfare agencies to end racial discrimination and bias in adoption recruitment, selection, and placement. Every child has a right to a permanent, loving family. For thousands of children in foster care each year, adoption helps achieve that. This National Adoption Month, we celebrate the adoptive families that embrace young people for who they are and allow them to feel proud of where they come from. This year’s theme "Honoring Youth: Strengthening Pathways for Lasting Bonds" emphasizes the importance of meaningful community connections and sense of identity for youth throughout their lives. Placing young people in foster care with families that understand and affirm their identity paves the way for long-term stability and well-being.
