Michael Giles has been serving 25 years in the Florida Department of Corrections. For his mother, Phyllis, Thanksgiving and family meals still revolve around memories of him. “If Michael was home right now, the first thing I’d do is clean up all the hugs and tears—there would be plenty! After that, I’d prepare chicken wings, macaroni and cheese, and a strawberry pie, just like I used to make for him. I’d have it ready, along with a big, tall glass of milk.” This holiday season, we are reminded of the families who won’t have their loved ones at the dinner table. Help organizations like FAMM continue the fight for #ClemencyNow. FAMM President Shaneva D. McReynolds, Ph.D. and her husband, Jeffery, shared a teenage crush that was interrupted when she moved away. Years later, they reconnected while he was serving a lengthy prison sentence. Their story beautifully intertwines love and advocacy, beginning with Shaneva's efforts to secure his freedom and evolving into a commitment to fight for others still imprisoned with excessive sentences.
