We have received the long awaited results of our 🌽 field trial and are more than excited to finally share them with you! In short - we were able to: - reduce mineral fertilizer application by 50% - having 20% more fresh weight - getting identical dry weight - getting identical protein levels ... like the control variant. How did we do it and what are the implications? Our control got 140 kg N and 82 kg P in several applications over the entire growing cycle. In our variant and technology, we only injected 50% of those nutrients and applied all of them during seeding. We also integrated other biologicals such as bio stimulants. The second time, we got back into the field, was only during harvest! As a result, the farmer did not only save fuel, time and machinery. We were also able to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 500 kg per hectare considering that the nitrogen emissions of 142kg from production and N₂O are about 1 ton per hectare. This independent field trial was a big step for us in our journey to make farming more ecological, economical and climate friendly with our biochar based seed coatings!
About us
Farmula has developed a functional seed-coating made from biochar allowing to apply a great variety of agricultural substances directly to the seed where they are most efficient. Macro- and micronutrients as well as biologicals all interact with each other in order to increase yields. Biochar itself is a carbon sink, regenerating soils and bringing them back to life. In addition, the ability of biochar to store water helps young plants to better survive high temperatures. The black coating disguises the seed as a seed as such, reducing animal damage such as from birds.

We were very honoured to have been invited by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification to present how our biochar based seed coatings can play a role in building up soils. At the COP16Riyadh it once again became obvious, how important our soils are to food safety, security and peace. If we do not start treating soils like we depend on them, it will be very challenging to feed 10 billion people in the years to come and preserve current ecosystems. Fortunately, biochar is a great solution to poor water and nutrient holding capacities which are the core problem of degraded soils. Biochar both retains water and nutrients and stays in soils for hundreds and thousands of years. With our coatings, we do not only reduce mineral fertilizer application significantly, enable whole new generations of biological plant protection products and reduce operational costs to farmers, but also bringe biochar into the soil - every time a seed is planted. Thank you for having us and allowing for all those great and inspiring conversations, especially at the #Business4Land site with Sarah Toumi, Werner Fischer from Catalyze Group and ChangeNOW which have done an amazing job in bringing so many various actors from different sectors together. 100 million hectares of land are being degraded every year and valuable, fertile soils are lost. In order to reverse that trend, the UN Convention to Combat Desertification has set the target to restore 1.5 billion hectares of land by 2030. We are very proud, that we were asked by the UNCCD to present our technology at Cop16Riyadh. Why? With our seed coating, we are able to: ✅ Work biochar into soils which is able to store water and nutrients for many hundred years with every planting 🏃♀️Accelerate the creation of humus content in soils, restore them for future generations and store CO2 💪 Enable plants to better respond to heat by speeding up their internal transport system for water and nutrients 🌱 Allow plants to continue making photosynthesis at high temperatures and create more biomass Thank you again for that amazing opportunity Catalyze Group and Werner Fischer!
At our Catalyze Group office in Amsterdam, together with the UN Convention to Combat Desertification UNCCD, I hosted our kick-off event “The Road to COP16” to explore joint missions between Startups and the UNCCD ecosystem and work out critical success factors.
