Director Snehal Patel Discussing 2nd Unit Directing:
Status update - I've been busy juggling a few projects, currently prepping for a shoot in ATL next month. Writing and pitching has been going well. It's an interesting experience for sure, and can sometimes be stressful. There are moments along the way which help me feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel. One thing I learned recently, is just how much I enjoy 2nd Unit Directing. It combines the technical side of the brain with the creative, and is quite challenging at times. I approach it like a puzzle where you have some pieces; like footage and and/or rough edit of the main story content, lookbook, notes from the director and main DP, production notes, etc. The next step is to lay everything out and fill in the gaps with the content I'm responsible for capturing. Hopefully there is a plan in place, but sometimes it can be a very general requirement, which actually allows for a lot of creativity. Working with an off-site 2nd Unit crew seems to be a lot less stressful. It's mostly because there is no dialogue to worry about. Which gives you extra time to film per set-up or location, allowing for more options to hand over to post. What I observed in these situations, is the crew being able to voice their opinions more often, leading to interesting collaborations. Certainly, having a background in cameras and lenses comes in handy as a 2nd Unit Director, because there are plenty of technical shots to execute. Knowing the behavior of certain lenses, accessories and mounting solutions allows for creative rigging. Understanding VFX, stunts, OSVP and other complex shot setups makes it easier to collaborate with those department heads. They are already dealing with the 1st Unit, so the quicker you can get to an understanding, the better. All in all, it's a great gig which allows access to really cool productions. It's always a learning process, and I'm enjoying the ride.

Hello from Las Vegas! This is what it’s like to be a speaker at NAB Show, one of the biggest tech conferences in the cinema industry. The annual Nation Association of Broadcasters Show brings together some of the brightest minds from cinema, television, and content distribution to showcase the latest and greatest technology shaping our world of moving images. This year, I had the privilege of being a speaker at this tech conference. My sessions covered topics like directing for virtual production, AI, metadata, and standardization - all hot topics in our industry! It was quite an enriching experience to present alongside my fellow speakers and colleagues.
