Today, the Federation salutes Florida landowner and member, Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) James “JG” Wideman! In October 2024, James traveled to Epes, Alabama, to attend CoopEcon 2024—a transformative 3-day event designed to help member cooperatives achieve growth and address infrastructure needs. In November, he joined FSC/LAF's Membership Monday Meet-Up on Zoom, a virtual gathering where active members receive an orientation and learn about upcoming programs and opportunities. In early December 2024, as an heirs property landowner, James participated in our 6th Annual Heirs Property Boot Camp, where he received: • a comprehensive 12-month checklist • a detailed workbook • a suite of land retention tools and resources to guide families in establishing clear title pathways within a year. The historically rich community of Royal, Florida, where James was born and raised, holds a profound legacy. Royal was established in 1865 by Freedmen who acquired land post-Civil War. Over generations, this agricultural hub flourished, with many descendants still residing in the homes built by their ancestors. Today, the community faces significant threats from zoning changes that allow large-scale industrial and housing developments. Join the fight to preserve Royal’s rich heritage by signing the petition >> https://lnkd.in/e-N5D6Y2 #BlackOwnedLand #CooperativeEconomics #HeirsProperty #CommunityPreservation #jointhemovement #black #landowner #heirs #heirsproperty #membership #fsclaf #community #history #family #legacy #advocacy #cooperatives #Southern #signthepetition #share

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives/LAF commends USDA for sending historic #DFAP payments to producers discriminated against in the farm loan process before January 2021. "This announcement is a monumental step toward rectifying decades of systemic discrimination that Black farmers have faced. We celebrate this progress and praise the Biden-Harris Administration for its commitment to equity, the Secretary of Agriculture and the USDA for carrying out this commitment, and all of the partners who helped to make this promise a reality. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that there is equity in agriculture and that Black farmers are a respected and crucial part of the solution to our nation's challenges." said Cornelius Blanding, Executive Director, Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund.
