Fair, Inclusive, Circular, Healthy cities: Transforming Phosphogypsum into sustainable products
About us
FIC-FIGHTERS is an EU-funded initiative aimed at creating sustainable economic models to manage waste that threatens our natural and cultural heritage. This project fosters dialogue on innovative solutions for long-standing waste accumulation issues near urban areas. By engaging local actors, industries, authorities, SMEs, RTD centers, and universities, we aim to scale up waste recovery processes to TRL6-7 under the principles of the circular economy. Our focus is on the valorisation of phosphogypsum waste (PG) to produce sustainable raw materials for the paper, cement, batteries, fertilizers, and detergents industries. Over the next 48 months, in collaboration with the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI), we will: 1. Build a Mobile Pilot Plant: Demonstrate sustainable production of raw materials (sodium sulfate, REE and P, aluminum hydroxide, ammonium sulfate, and precipitated calcium carbonate) starting from PG and other wastes, using optimized results and digital twin technology. 2. Create a PG Forum: Facilitate local discussions and workshops across 7 case studies, including citizen participation, to address socio-economic, environmental, and regulatory aspects of new circular business models. 3. Enhance Flexibility and Replicability: Develop the first known PG Exploitation Portal to identify, characterize, and engage all European cities facing similar challenges. 4. Promote Knowledge Exchange: Participate in clustering and CCRI events, establish a Community of Practice, and ensure project results are publicly available and exploitable, while addressing IP protection. 5. Provide Circularity Guidelines: Develop guidelines based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), social, and health and safety studies. Join us in transforming waste into sustainable opportunities and fostering a healthier, more inclusive future for our cities.

We were glad to meet representatives from the EU-funded projects CircSyst, CisWEFE-NEX, CSSBoost and SOLSTICE at this first clustering event ⬇ Looking forward to a fruitful collaboration with all sister projects! #circulareconomy #HorizonEurope
🔗 CSSBoost Boost in Circular Economy Clustering Event! 🔗 In July, CSSBoost Boost actively participated in a remote clustering event focused on advancing circular economy projects, including those under the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) funded by the European Commission 🇪🇺. We engaged in insightful discussions to compare impacts and methodologies with CCRI projects like CircSyst, CisWEFE-NEX, FIC-Fighters, and SOLSTICE ,as well as planning for future events to come. Looking forward to the next round of calls and all the activities that will come from them! Stay tuned as we continue driving sustainable solutions forward!💡 ➡ Visit our website: https://lnkd.in/dbCV38_f #Innovation #Sustainability #TeamWork #CircularEconomy #HorizonEU #Horizon2020 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης - Technical University of Crete, Imperial College London, Gruppo Maggioli, CAS Software AG, krumedia GmbH, Technologiezentrum Horb GmbH & Co. It´s a great honor to be part of this project in collaboration with Dr. Luis Esquivias, Dr. Víctor Morales and Fatima Ez-zahrae Mrizak. I´m participating in the partnership between CapturaCO2 and the Universidad de Sevilla, along with 24 other partners, within the European project FIC-Fighters. This initiative focuses on the transformation of phosphogypsum (waste primarily composed of gypsum, with a small percentage of impurities) into commercial products through CO2 capture and the reutilization of various types of waste.

How can we transform #phosphogypsum waste into valuable resources? This is the focus of the new #EU-funded FIC-FIGHTERS project. Over the next four years, we will conduct research to produce sustainable raw materials for the #paper, #cement, #batteries, #fertilisers, and #detergents industries. We will actively engage local communities in this new #circulareconomy initiative through dialogue. Yesterday, the project partners met for the kick-off meeting in Seville 🇪🇸 to discuss the next steps. We extend our gratitude to our hosts from IDENER.AI for the excellent meeting organisation and to European Research Executive Agency (REA) project officer Vessela Stoyanova-Monteleone for her commitment and support. Thanks also to the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI) for sharing insights on how to maximise participation in this European initiative.
