About us

Effaeye Aawenyn has worked as a violin and fiddle teacher for over 23 years. Her individualized teaching style brings out every student's potential for playing with artistry and musicality, no matter what age or level of study. Known for being patient and creative, she's a very experienced teacher of young children and beginners of all ages. For intermediate through advanced students she offers expertise in nuanced bowing techniques, tone production, rhythm, phrasing, and stage presence. She studied classical violin with Dr. Joseph Conte in the 1980s, and taught at Maine Fiddle Camp in the early 2000s. A longtime dance teacher, she's earned two professional training certificates from the Bates Dance Festival. Her original curriculum of creative movement and fiddle music has been presented at libraries, schools, and children’s museums since 2003. Effaeye's original fiddle compositions are featured on four albums (@fiddledancemusic). Reviews of her work as a fiddler and singer, in a country duet with newgrass (Breakfast Special and Skyline) songwriter Jim Tolles, praise "a powerful performance … marked by front-porch informality and graced with superior musicianship" (Will Gottlieb, Coastal Journal). Effaeye's current projects include recording a new album of compositions (www.instagram.com/effaeye), teaching private students throughout the Madison area, and working as an instructor at the UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic. More fiddle compositions recently released ... listen at https://lnkd.in/geG4Hubm Found while rustling and rooting about, in the process of creating a larger album, here is a small one – archival portraits of newly composed tunes when they were very young (and I was too). Some of these recordings are me playing the piece for only the second (or so) time ever. This invites the full freshness and rawness that comes with exploring the physical tussle of playing the violin – especially when also in the midst of discovering new melodies. These compositions are inspired by many dance and music traditions, with plenty of theater and imagination involved as well. Also made very real in these performances is the sound of an older generation of fiddlers, especially in the Dovetail Jig. As a bridge between improvisation and memory, creating these melodies has always been a playful experiment! *** Effaeye Aawenyn has worked as a violin and fiddle instructor for 23 years, and is also a longtime dance teacher. Effaeye's compositions have been featured on four albums (@fiddledancemusic) under her former name Susan Hope Hoffman, and in her performances at Johnny D’s Uptown Restaurant & Music Club. Reviewer William Cutlip noted she “plays a fine, rhythmically charged fiddle informed by time spent with Don Roy and other Maine fiddle monsters.” Master fiddler Greg Boardman described her composing and playing as “proud of its rural past, relishing the present … inviting, warm, energized and straight ahead, with a bit of mischief thrown in.” Effaeye studied classical violin with Dr. Joseph Conte (concertmaster of the Rhode Island Philharmonic) in the 1980s, and taught at Maine Fiddle Camp in the early 2000s. She performs and teaches throughout the Madison area, including Monroe Street Arts Center and the 2024 UW-Madison Summer Music Clinic.
