The 2024 Fin-Erth 101 Women in Climate Awards – List now live 🌏 https://lnkd.in/gPqjfqAC 🌍 We are excited to shine a spotlight on the incredible 101 women from around the world who are brilliantly working to unlock climate and sustainability solutions. From large corporations to asset managers, from scaleups to financiers - these women are getting on with the job. Unlocking climate solutions in any and every way they see fit. Yes, progress feels too slow. Yes, the frustrations are clear. But what this list demonstrates—and what we hope it inspires—is a sense of optimism and belief in the potential for change. We asked you, the climate community, to nominate those who you know are going above and beyond to unlock solutions. We received almost 600 nominations from 45 different countries. And this is just year 1. What we now know from having spent weeks going through all the nominations is that the rise of action is here. From the outside, you might not be seeing it. From the inside, you might be frustrated as hell. BUT, these women are demonstrating that the foundational steps for meaningful transformation are in place. That the groundswell of climate-doers is growing. The determination, selflessness and sheer effort we saw across ALL the nominations was astounding and something we want to recognize here. This is not a list of winners, it is our attempt to recognize some exceptional women who truly represent the action going on across the globe. 🌎 Just a few days to go before we announce the 2024 Fin-Erth Women in Climate Awards 🌎 Seeing the nominations flow in has left us at Fin-Erth both in awe and astounded by the sheer number and quality we received in this inaugural year. It has left us feeling more optimistic about our planet's future. The breadth, depth and originality of the nominations have left us astounded. We started the Awards because we wanted to celebrate the amazing women working so tirelessly to unlock climate solutions worldwide; to celebrate the unsung heroes. As one nominator said “There are no big names without the missing middle behind the scenes.” With so many negative headlines and high-level policy setbacks, seeing the wood from the trees can be hard. We had a feeling we were not the only ones who felt like this and the level of support and enthusiasm we have received from the climate community for the awards has confirmed our instincts. We have been painstakingly going through all the nominations, creating shortlists for each category, consulting with nominators as well as those working across the sectors, sponsors, and nominating partners. It feels so mundane and ’tired’ to say that it has been a very difficult decision to pick the 101 women to highlight this year. But truly this is the case. This is not a list of ‘winners’. For us, our Fin-Erth + MSCI Inc. dinner during COP29 was a much needed reminder that trust happens when smart people come together. A reminder that we should celebrate those challenging the status quo, those determined to push their organisations forward with action. During a year of COPs and negotiations which have ended in disappointment for so many, evenings like this one bring hope. Hope that when great people make such enormous effort to travel to these global moments – training their whole lives like Olympians with the single goal of driving change – that change can, in fact, happen. Running multiple marathons to make a difference. For us, that's the very best of humanity and worth celebrating. There's nothing quite like a packed room of some of the smartest women in finance, business, and climate to warm the heart and lift the spirits. We're hoping these photos from the Fin-Erth + MSCI Inc. Unlocking Solutions dinner during #COP29 paint a vivid picture, that words won't match. With attendees representing over 25 different countries and working across a variety of climate verticals, we are proud to be breaking down silos, focusing on solutions and giving these incredible women the space to network and build trust. Baku and COP29 Azerbaijan here we come. As Margaret Mead says so brilliantly: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." With this being labelled as the finance COP, we are excited to host our annual COP dinner with MSCI Inc. bringing together the leading women in climate, business and finance on Finance Day. We know there has been a lot of talk about whether or not people are going to COP29 for various valid reasons. While it is easy to get caught up in this discourse, at Fin-Erth we believe that being in the room matters. These moments enable humans to learn from each other, explore deal flow and create connections. These moments encourage collaboration and can inspire action. These moments are where solutions unlock. For us, it is about the consistency of showing up. Margaret Mead reminds us that it's not the group size that matters, it's the output. The 'Missing Middle': Why We Need Another Awards Programme Our Awards focus on what we internally call ‘the missing middle’. When we were identifying women to invite to our COP28 dinner, we started looking at the different climate and sustainability awards out there for inspiration, and we noticed a few things… A glaring gap. It wasn’t really a glaring gender gap because we believe most awards programmes have done a fantastic job of ensuring gender diversity. What was missing for us was the cohort of women getting the work done often in unglamorous but mission-critical sectors. The women behind the scenes who were not speaking on every panel; those who aren't celebrities or high-profile politicians. The women who are, in fact, crunching the data to ensure a bank can deploy capital to an energy transition project, the women who are battling boards every single day to ensure sustainability remains on the agenda, the women innovating in large companies enabling a solution to come to fruition and making their company one step closer to net-zero, or the tenacious women building companies to solve a specific climate problem. This awards programme is for them. The ‘worker-she’s’ who are not often recognised publicly for their incredible contribution to unlocking climate solutions and whose work is creating change at scale. We visualise it as following the shape of a standard deviation graph… On one side you have the grass roots activists who do amazing work (we internally call them the early adopters) and on the other side there are ‘the big names,’ often household names, - those who get air time for their contribution. But the honest truth is: we need everyone. The Fin-Erth Awards are for the those in the middle. Without their graft, determination and resilience, we believe that very little of the positive progress being made would happen. So… a call to nominate. Who are the women you know who are getting the work done? Who are the women you work with, collaborate with, admire who are using business and finance to help move us towards a better climate future? Tim Harford's brilliant book, Messy, is a great companion for the whirlwind of New York Climate Week. It reminds us that stepping away from day-to-day structure can be good for the soul, good for business and good for unlocking our brains. His evidence shows that "creativity, excitement and humanity lie in the messy parts of life, not the tidy ones." And by goodness, we need humanity, non-linear thinking and solutions perhaps now more than ever. The Fin-Erth dinner with UNICEF Innovation united over 40+ women working in the intersection of climate, innovation, enterprise and finance, breaking down the silos that usually exist. We are convinced that the care and attention invested in great humans coming together has to be part of tomorrow's story.
