NEW FROM FINISHING LINE PRESS: Lungs by Chris Bullard On SALE: https://lnkd.in/gZxw7TAY PRAISE FOR Lungs by Chris Bullard: Chris Bullard gives full rein to his wit and pathos in Lungs, a collection of meditations on time, mortality, and the vagaries of the self. As he writes in “Day of the Dead,” “I’d buried my past selves in desert graves/where authorities wouldn’t look. /Now they’ve returned dressed in my clothes.” Bullard’s voice is deadpan, ironic, erudite, playfully, archly, and sometimes seriously morbid, not to mention amazing. –Lynn Levin, author of House Parties The prime mover of these lively poems is death. Chris Bullard knows exactly how to make a reader squirm, casting doctors and nurses as predators, turning the dead loose from their crypts, reminding us that life is a hopeless gamble because the house wins every time. Not even living “as our own best selfie” can protect us indefinitely from random lightning strikes, break-ins, or adverse health events. Bullard’s poems circle closer and closer to an inescapable black hole, plunging us into it with the startling specificity of the final poem. –Anne-Adele Wight, author of An Internet of Containment These poems CAT-scan below the surface of quotidian life and remind us there is not one among us who is not living with a terminal diagnosis, but it is an insight leavened by Bullard’s command of craft, his characteristic dry wit, and the vitality of his voice. The angel’s share, referenced in the collection’s opening poem, “Guilt,” refers to that percentage of fine whiskey evaporated and lost in the aging process; in these clarified poems the losses of human aging become a release, a permission that borders on renewal. –Christine Gelineau, author of Crave and Remorseless Loyalty: Please share/repost #flpauthor #preorder #AwesomeCoverArt #read #poems #literature #poetry #time #life #death #living #illness #healthcare #health #terminal #diagnosis

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: Simple Fact by Bronwen Butter Newcott On SALE: https://lnkd.in/gtFZe5d8 In Simple Fact, Bronwen Newcott explores the intricacies of #family over #generations, “the daughter-mother-sun / rising on repeat.” The collection is a meditation between the seen and the unseen, the “simple fact” and “shadow between… fingers,” insisting that muscular love exists between the two. Newcott’s play forward and backwards in time allows mother and father to be specific, vocational, and archetypal at once. From a juicy orange dripping to the elbow, to the chalky scrim of loss that shadows a generation, Newcott’s poems seek “small sweet proof” that we are living. #poetry Bronwen Butter Newcott was born and raised in Washington, DC and earned an MFA in poetry from the University of Maryland. Her poems have appeared in Image, Poet Lore, Indiana Review, Prairie Schooner and other journals. She is the author of Race to the Great Invention, her debut middle grade novel. Wild about the intersection between written and visual expression, Bronwen spends her time writing, speaking, and teaching art to kids and adults in Southern California where she lives with her family.

FLP BOOK OF THE DAY: Waysides by Mike Matthews On SALE: https://lnkd.in/gbqrXPHs Waysides holds the whispers that speak through the cracks opening between minutes. When I take walks to the park and practice listening for still moments, a mailbox near the street with no house for its address, a cat with electric yellow eyes set inside a dark, black shape, or an abandoned and decaying porch that may have warmed jars of sun tea might peak through those cracks. Waysides takes note of those fragments, pebbles, splinters left on the side of a steady flow of time and lays them on the page like pieces of glass that catch the light at odd angles. #poetry #life #time #history #art #human
