Choosing Fire Apparatus Doors: Lap Doors vs. Roll-Up Doors When planning the construction of a new fire apparatus, fire departments face many important decisions. One of these decisions is selecting between lap doors (hinged doors) and roll-up doors. The choice is influenced by factors such as the nature of the calls the department handles, the equipment typically stored on the apparatus, and the specific functional and operational needs of the compartments. Lap Doors: A lap door (also known as a hinged door) is a flat, double-pan door that opens on hinges, which can be mounted either vertically or horizontally. Advantages of lap doors include: a traditional smooth and clean look, easy operation and functionality, low maintenance, minor equipment interior mounts, and maximized storage space. Roll-Up Doors: Roll-up doors consist of double-sided extrusions that are sealed together and open vertically and coil up at the top of the compartment. The benefits of roll-up doors include: a modern, sleek appearance, quick access to equipment, unobstructed sightlines during emergencies, and a bracket-free interior.
