Join the Penn State Chaiken Center for Student Success in celebrating #PSUFirstGen students this week! Meet first-gen students, faculty, staff, and alumni for a mixer with free food, networking, first-gen recognition awards, and awesome door prizes at the First-Gen Community Night on Thur., Nov. 7, from 6–8 p.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center's Lion's Lair (HUB 008). Community Night attendees are encouraged to bring an item for the Lion's Pantry and to register to save a spot. On Fri., Nov. 8, celebrate with food, activities, giveaways, and prizes throughout the HUB-Robeson Center at the HUB Takeover from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Students can stop by to connect with the first-gen advocates student org, the first-gen honor society, and other helpful Penn State resources. Calling all first-generation graduate and undergraduate students! The First-Generation Graduate School Symposium is next Wednesday. Join leaders of the Graduate School as they guide you through integral graduate school information, like applications, how to manage feelings of imposter syndrome, and benefits available to you as a student. Happy #PSUFirstGen Friday! Today we're highlighting a current staff member and recent alumna, Alyssa Hanford. Alyssa graduated from Penn State University Park and now works for Penn State's TRiO Upward Bound, which provides precollege programming and support to local high school students who come from families where parents/guardians did not graduate from college.  Alyssa's advice to first-gen students is to "Embrace your hardship, and don’t let it eat away at you. Instead, let it be a reminder of how hard you’ve worked, the character you’ve built for yourself, and the life you will lead, that you worked so hard to achieve all on your own." This #PSUFirstGen Friday, we're pleased to introduce Aura Karina Cardona Vargas! Originally from Colombia, Aura Karina Cardona Vargas is pursuing the LL.M. degree at Penn State Law University Park campus. A trailblazer in her family, she shares that "being first-generation is not easy; however, it is a huge motivation for me to know that my cousins and my younger sister see me as a role model and that it is also possible for them to be in spaces that were unimaginable for our grandparents."
