To sustain ocean ecosystems and the people who depend on them by transforming global supply chains.
About us
FishWise’s mission is to sustain ocean ecosystems and the people who depend on them by transforming global seafood supply chains. FishWise envisions a future in which the seafood industry, in collaboration with governments and civil society, takes full accountability for the people and the ocean resources upon which it depends, so that: PEOPLE—the millions of women and men who harvest, produce, process, and sell seafood—benefit and thrive in an inclusive and equitable industry with decent working conditions for all; OCEANS—the marine and freshwater ecosystems that are integral for supporting life on this planet—remain productive and biodiverse while providing a critical source of healthy protein to meet the needs of a growing global population; and SEAFOOD ENTERPRISES—the individuals, families, communities, and businesses around the globe that rely on seafood production—are sustained and can prosper for generations to come. Together, these elements comprise our holistic approach to sustainability.

🔍 Sustainable Seafood: Data-Driven Approaches to Social Responsibility 🔍 What data is needed to address labor risks? How can it be collected and used effectively? Our latest report, “Sustainable Seafood: Data-Driven Approaches to Social Responsibility,” provides insights into these critical questions, offering a framework to better understand and address risks through: 📋 Key Data Elements (KDEs): Data points like time spent at sea and vessel ownership details to uncover hidden risks. 🤝 Supplier Engagement: Enhancing supply chain transparency and incorporating worker-informed practices to better assess risks. ⚖️ Policy Integration: Aligning industry practices with regulations like SIMP and ILO 188 to reinforce supply chain accountability. 📖 Dive into the findings to see how data-driven approaches can support more responsible seafood supply chains: https://lnkd.in/ecdH-CZt #IUUFishing #SeafoodSustainability #HumanRights #DataDrivenSolutions

📣 🐟 New Report Alert 🐟 📣 The seafood industry faces urgent challenges: illegal fishing, human rights abuses, and navigating the complex web of data required to address these issues. In our latest report, “Sustainable Seafood: Data-Driven Approaches to Social Responsibility,” we explore how product-based traceability systems and due diligence efforts can help uncover and mitigate labor risks. Key Takeaways: ➡️ Leverage Key Data Elements (KDEs), such as vessel names and ownership details, to identify risks of forced labor and IUU fishing. ➡️ Combine KDEs with due diligence efforts, like supplier engagement and worker-informed practices, for a more holistic approach. ➡️ Foster collaboration among businesses, governments, and NGOs to drive meaningful change. 🔗 Read the full report to discover a pragmatic framework for leveraging data to address seafood challenges: https://lnkd.in/ecdH-CZt Let’s turn data into action. 💡 #SeafoodSustainability #SocialResponsibility #Traceability #LaborRights

Climate protection starts in the ocean. 🌊 🌱 Marine and coastal ecosystems such as mangroves and seagrass meadows are true climate heroes: they store huge amounts of carbon while providing food and income for millions of people. Unfortunately, they are disappearing worldwide at an alarming rate. Today, on #OceanActionDay at #COP29, we are calling for coastal and marine ecosystems to finally be given greater consideration in international climate protection plans. 🚨The ocean is our most valuable nature-based solution in the fight against the climate crisis, but it is still being sidelined. This COP must be where that finally changes. “Protecting and restoring marine ecosystems must be a core part of climate action”, says Steve Trent, CEO and Founder of the Environmental Justice Foundation. Ocean and climate action go hand in hand. 🤝 Close cooperation between global agreements such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (#UNFCCC) and the UN Ocean Conference (#UNOC) is therefore urgently needed. FishWise is pleased to see NOAA Fisheries’ recent release of recommendations for the U.S. Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP). Many of the themes raised by stakeholders in our Common Ground and Reimagining SIMP workshops, including the need for pre-entry product screening, are reflected in the plan. This shift will help enhance SIMP’s detection and deterrence efforts, contributing to more transparent and responsible seafood supply chains. We look forward to continued discussions and seeing the details of the upcoming proposed rule. Learn more about NOAA’s action plan here: https://lnkd.in/eKYpNfbD
