It was a privilege to have the opportunity to meet Antonia Coello Novello, MD, MPH, Dr.PH, first woman and first Hispanic Surgeon General of the United States, whose groundbreaking career has paved the way and opened doors for future generations of women and Hispanic leaders. She also happens to be from beautiful Fajardo, Puerto Rico where I was lucky enough to spend countless weekends of my childhood. I left inspired by her stories, accomplishments, her advice to those in the medical field to understand the culture of Hispanic patients, critical for their proper care, and her energy to still continue to accomplish many more goals. A special thank you to Meme Ferré for this wonderful invitation, to listen to Dr. Coello and to see first hand some of the cherished mementos from Major Ferre housed at the FIU Maurice A.
