Flanders confirms its commitment to the humanitarian situation in Gaza, renewing support to UN agency UNRWA. For the period 2025-2027, the amount involved is €479,000. The support is for humanitarian aid and development-oriented activities for Palestinian refugees. UNRWA, as the largest humanitarian actor, plays a crucial role in providing aid in the Middle East. The organization operates in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, providing essential services such as education, health care, social services and emergency shelter. Flanders' support to UNWRA continues annually, provided that the recommendations of the Colonna report are followed. In addition, Flanders provides its own control mechanisms, including evaluation of administrative and financial conditions and reporting on the use of funds. 📣 Minister-President meets Belarus opposition leader Tsikhanouskaya Today, Minister-President of Flanders Matthias Diependaele received the standard-bearer of the Belarusian democratic opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, within the framework of the Belarus Days in Brussels. During this meeting, he announced that Flanders would allocate a €100,000 grant to the Council of Europe. These funds are intended to support Belarusian journalists and media actors in exile to strengthen objective reporting and counter disinformation. This aligns with Flanders’ Strategy for the East, which is committed to working with movements defending democratic values and human rights. The Flanders Chancellery and Foreign Office coordinates these efforts and works closely with international partners to support free media and democratic transition. The Delegation of Flanders in Paris co-facilitates cooperation with the Council of Europe. At the same time, our Delegation of Flanders in Warsaw is a crucial hub for contacts and initiatives in the region. The announcement comes at a critical time, ahead of the impending presidential elections in Belarus (January 2025), and demonstrates Flanders’ solidarity with democratic movements in the region. Yesterday in Paris, the results of UNESCO's groundbreaking project on Environmental DNA (eDNA) in UNESCO marine World Heritage Sites were presented. General Representative of Flanders in France, Anne Laure Léger, provided the closing remarks during the press conference. Flanders played a key role in this initiative, funded through the Flemish UNESCO trust funds of our Department and the Department of Economy, Science and Innovation. Thanks to the efforts of VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute and KU Leuven, more than 4,500 different species of marine life were mapped using an innovative and non-invasive technique. This project sets a new global standard for monitoring biodiversity and contributes to solutions for sustainable nature management. Impressive Results for the Flanders-Funded UNESCO eDNA Project for Marine Biodiversity! Today, I had the pleasure of delivering the closing remarks at the press conference for UNESCO’s groundbreaking eDNA project, a global initiative where Flanders played a pivotal role. Launched by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, the press conference also welcomed Lazare Eloundou and Vidar Helgesen. Thanks to financial support from Flanders through the UNESCO trust funds of Flanders Chancellery and Foreign Office and Departement Economie, Wetenschap en Innovatie (EWI), as well as the expertise of the VLIZ - Flanders Marine Institute, this project is setting a new global standard for mapping marine biodiversity. Perfectly aligned with the Flanders Government's ambitions to foster multilateral partnerships and drive technological innovation for a sustainable future, the project was led by Dr. Fanny Douvere, head of UNESCO's Marine World Heritage Programme, and Ward Appeltans, leader of IOC OBIS, with contributions from institutions such as KU Leuven and the Koninklijk Museum voor Midden-Afrika in Tervuren. This pioneering #citizenscience and #openscience project has created high-resolution #biodiversity snapshots across 21 Underwater World Heritage sites, engaging 250 local citizens— from 6-year and older —and indigenous communities from 19 countries. They took over 400 water samples which were analyzed using environmental DNA (eDNA). These samples revealed the presence of 4,500 marine species, including 120 listed as endangered by IUCN and 260 newly identified. You'll find more information via this link: https://lnkd.in/dyNs9KfT The project highlights critical impacts of climate change, such as species migration to cooler waters and the rise of invasive species. Its results are openly accessible via the eDNA dashboard, showcasing the power of tangible, low-cost, and scalable methodologies in marine science. Beyond research outcomes, this initiative sets a benchmark for citizen and open science, offering tools and methodologies that can be upscaled but also replicated in other contexts. We're now looking for other contributors to join us in taking this initiative to the next level. This initiative also contributes significantly to the “30x30” target of the Kunming-Montreal biodiversity agreement, aiming to protect 30% of oceans and nature by 2030. 🌊✨ On a personal note, both Dr. Fanny Douvere and myself started our career with a FTP Flanders Trainee Programme scholarship at UNESCO! // 🎉 30 years of diplomatic relations: Flanders and the EU The Diplomatic Representation of Flanders to the European Union is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This special anniversary coincides with the start of a new General Representative, Gaetan Poelman. On 4 December, we celebrated with a reception for our European network, in the presence of the Minister-President of Flanders, Matthias Diependaele. The Minister-President highlighted the importance of an active Flemish role within the EU: “The creation of this Representation of Flanders was a clear message: Flanders is an active player in the EU, a strong region that acts responsibly and builds partnerships. We resolutely opt for an active role in the European agenda, not as a follower, but as a co-initiator of policy." His conclusion: “We need Europe, but Europe also needs Flanders.” On September 1st, Gaetan Poelman took office as Flanders' General Representative to the EU. He emphasized “In the coming years, my mission is to be a bridge builder between Flanders and the EU. Yes, there will be obstacles, many obstacles, but there will also be opportunities. Flanders is ready to play its part in this endeavor, and I am honored to represent a region that embodies the values of hard work, creativity, and solidarity.” Axel Buyse Filip D'havé Julie Bynens Matthias De Moor Frank Ingelaere Photographer: Sive Cauwenberghs #FlandersinEU #EU #Celebration
