The History of Flatwoods Flatwoods Consulting Group Inc., founded in 2009 by Lee Walton and Shannon Gonzalez, emerged from a shared vision to create a more "people-focused" environmental consulting firm. Starting with no contracts or clients, the duo relied on their strong reputations and expertise in biological sciences to navigate the complexities of environmental regulations related to wetlands, wildlife, and water. Flatwoods quickly gained traction, attracting clients who valued cost-effective and efficient solutions for their intricate projects. Today, the firm has expanded to 43 full-time staff members, known as “Flatwooders,” who collaborate on diverse projects across sectors like mining, transportation, and residential development. Flatwoods operates under the Ethic of Reciprocity, treating others as they wish to be treated, fostering a collaborative and respectful workplace and culture. This philosophy extends to their client relationships, emphasizing mutual respect and constructive dialogue, which has been crucial in navigating the often-contentious environmental project landscape. In 2024, due in large part to their tremendous success and unique capabilities, Flatwoods was acquired by Verdantas, a well-suited collaboration due to a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and communities. Verdantas emphasizes a people-focused approach, integrating technology and sustainability into their operations. This merger enhances Flatwoods’ capabilities, enabling them to tackle complex environmental challenges more effectively. As the Flatwoods team prepares to transition to the Verdantas name in the new year, we are excited about the opportunities ahead. By joining Verdantas, we aim to expand our reach and continue delivering exceptional service while upholding our core values of respect, collaboration, and ethical responsibility. This evolution positions Flatwoods to contribute even more significantly to a sustainable future, reinforcing our dedication to our clients, our communities, and the environment.
