The elimination of de minimis for Chinese-origin imports—currently on hold, per last Friday’s executive order—will likely mean more air cargo capacity and a sharp decline in air freight rates. Though ecommerce brands may stabilize demand by shipping air freight in bulk, “it’s always an ‘if’,” Thomas P.C. Kempf, Flexport’s Senior Director of Global Air Freight, told Sourcing Journal. “Overall demand may also decline as costs increase. For some players, these costs will be too much, and that will potentially push rates downward in the first half of 2025.” Meanwhile, concerns about potential tariffs on the EU have driven up rates in European lanes. “You can see on the Transatlantic Westbound in particular that rates have increased quite strongly in recent weeks,” Thomas continued. “That’s most likely to do with front-loading activities of shippers, which makes sense. There’s still some time now to get some goods into the United States.” Read the full article here: https://flx.to/sj-LI

Yesterday, President Trump announced a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, effective March 12. The executive orders will eliminate country-specific exemptions, product exclusions, and duty-free quotas he’d granted during his first term—when he first levied steep tariffs on the metals—while raising the tariff on foreign aluminum from 10% to 25%. The move largely affects countries like Canada and Mexico, among the U.S.’s largest suppliers of steel and aluminum. It also targets China, the world’s biggest producer of both metals—some of which has entered the U.S. tariff-free via “third countries” like Mexico, one of the trading partners Trump exempted from steel and aluminum duties in 2019.
