This week has met me with excited anticipation as I prepare for the 42nd edition Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Montego Bay, Jamaica next week. (I think I've attended 25!) Suffice to say this is a very important conference for me -- and for the region's tourism industry -- celebrated by Caribbean hoteliers and government tourism boards, DMOs, and a global representation of marketing and innovation partners, OTAs, tour operators and other specialty buyers. An appropriate moment to share the beginning of a recorded conversation I had with my partners at Flip.to about promoting the travel experience in the Caribbean, and the importance of cultural storytelling to distinguish one destination from another. The CHTA and CTO count 33 destinations among their membership -- each one offering sun, sea, sand and surf, but how are they different? The natural beauty that surrounds is uniquely beautiful and each one distinct from the next, but the food, music, art, fashion, the people -- culture brings the beauty of a place to the next level. Cultural storytelling inspires travel in a way that a digital ad or a price point cannot. The message we do our best to convey to all of our partners is to lead with the culture.
