🇱🇰 Introducing the Sri Lanka FLOW Project! 🇱🇰 We are excited to announce another region joining the Food Learning and Growing Partnership. Sri Lanka is a nation with a rich agricultural heritage, but has relied heavily on synthetic chemicals so that today only 5% of arable land was being farmed understand sustainable production systems. In 2021, the government made the bold decision to ban chemical fertilizers and pesticides as a step towards transforming the food system. However, without sufficient support and alternatives, this move led to widespread food insecurity. Chatura Rodrigo is leading this work in Sri Lanka. As part of the FLOW Project the research will explore participatory governance to identify practical, community-driven solutions that will help farmers transition to more resilient, organic farming methods. By collaborating with local and international partners, we aim to create a food system that is equitable, sustainable, and resilient. 🥗 Introducing the Melbourne FLOW Project! 🥗 The peri-urban areas surrounding Melbourne are vital for food production but face increasing pressures from urban encroachment and climate shocks. The Foodprint Melbourne project draws on the FAO city region system approach by engaging a multi-actor group of local, regional, and state level government partners (including the City of Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula Shire), civil society organizations and funders. Rachel Carey and Maureen Murphy, PhD are leading this work at the University of Melbourne to develop indicators to track progress towards creating equitable, sustainable, resilient, and healthy regional food systems. 🍊 Introducing the Mexico FLOW Project! 🍊   In northern Veracruz, farmers, Indigenous communities, and women leaders are coming together to transform citrus farming through agroecology.   Huerta Madre Farm was once a conventional citrus farm, but over the past 20 years has transitioned to a holistic agroecological system. Over 3,500 small-scale producers have participated in this transition, moving away from agrochemicals and adopting sustainable techniques like cover cropping, manual weed management, and using artisanal bio-inputs to protect the land and improve yields.   Now, farmers, researchers, and community leaders are working together to scale up agroecological citrus production. The Mexico FLOW project is building capacity, sharing knowledge, and influencing state and national policy to ensure that sustainable food systems become a priority at multiple scales. 🌱 Introducing the FLOW Montreal Project Team 🌱 The Island of Montreal is home to over 2 million people, with diverse challenges and realities around food access. The Montreal FLOW Team is working to build a food system that’s healthy, local, affordable, and sustainable for everyone, by amplifying and mobilizing the work of food system stakeholders! 🍏🍞 The team is comprised of a group of students and researchers from Dawson College, led by Anna-Liisa Aunio, as well as staff at the Montreal Food Policy Council, Conseil du système alimentaire montréalais, including Anne Marie Aubert, Rachel Cheng, Erika Salem and many others! As the Council moves into a strategic planning process, the research team will evaluate the council's impact, and explore main themes on participatory governance, equity, decolonization, and resilient food systems. The Kenya FLOW Team, led by Dr. Samuel Gudu at Rongo University is introducing sustainable farming techniques—like permaculture, crop rotation, and regenerative farming—to empower farmers and make food systems more resilient.
